Question about Rio Carbon MP3 Player
Hi Folks. I was given a Rio Carbon as it was not working. I have other Rio products. Anyway. When I first plugged the Carbon into the USB port of my computer, the battery charge display showed for about a minute, then the display showed the Rio Logo. So far so good. No lights come on at this point. Then, the display changes to the word "Updater". I have run a variety of firmware programs that are for the carbon (found them on the Rio site and others.) and they do see the Carbon, but display the firmware as version 0.0. A few times the program has returned that the update did not work and does not state a reason, but most of the time it says it was successful. Then, the Carbon reboots and does the same thing as listed above. I've left it plugged into the USB port over night and tried again, and still get only the Updater sign, but no longer see the battery charge display. I've booted while holding down the reset button and power buttons at the same time. Still no luck. When I go into Windows XP Explorer, I can see that the Carbon is there, but when I click on it Windows asks me to "Insert a disc into Drive F", which would be the next drive. Is this Carbon better off as a door wedge than attempting to make it work? I'm willing to take it apart if something would help such as perhaps a loose connection. Thanks for in advance for your help!
Well i own one too and thats probly the hard drive being stuck...just smack it against something hard , like sorta bump the rubber armor against the heel of your hand or a countertop...worked good for me...ya have to do it a few times...dont worry rio is defunct so theres really no warranty to think of anywayz

I've had the same problem with that damn UPGRADER but I JUST FIXED MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!. i don't know if this will work for all of them but it's worth a try. i pushed and held both the poswer button and the joystick down and held it till Rio showed then the words Cali appeared underneath then the back light lit up. after that i let go of both buttons and BOOM! i had my player back! i wish you all the best with getting it to work

Press with a niddle on the reset hole, and after the message is gone try to turn it on. You should get an empty battery image, then recharge.

Perhaps an explanation would help.
I've disassembled my rio, and surprisingly, it's not a hard drive in there.
It's a 4G compact flash card. The card is oriented so the connector edge is towards the bottom.
Thus, smackiing on the 'rubber side' reseats the card.

Hi. I alternated hitting reset at different points and trying to read the Carbon. Eventually, the computer stopped asking me to insert a disk. I formatted it and upgraded it, but it still isn't working 100%. I think this is the light at the end of the tunnel!

To think I actually have been resisting the urge to beat on this thing for two days. One decent whack fixed it.

Wow thank you everyone. I tore apart my apartment trying to find the rio CD that came with the player, didn't find it, googled rio upgrader, and thankfully the first result was this one. I share in the amazement that hitting the player works like a charm. I just tapped the bottom rubber side on the desk a couple of times and it snapped out of its coma.

Whoever put the idea about smacking it real hard is a genius!

For me I just kept trying the update and smacking it around in different directions. The update finally was able to finish after I hit it on the screen side.

I can't believe it, but Solution #2 works! After hours of trying to reload stuff, I gave it just one whack & hey presto!! Brilliant!

Solution number 3 (the one about hitting it on something hard) amazingly works great!!

SOURCE: rio carbon upgrader message
Hi Linda, Your Rio Carbon is telling you that something is messed with its firmware and it can be resolved with an upgrade. You have to determine the exact model of your unit and download the firmware from http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/. Again you must choose the exact model. There are two ways of updating firmware updater or internet updater. complete instructions are also available. further you would need to connect your Rio to a PC to perform the upgrade. Good luck and pls post back should you need further information. Kind regards.

SOURCE: what does upgrader mean
You may have broken the hard drive,
Try replacing it with a CF card,
Everybody says that this does not work but it definitely does!
My Rio got dropped and I completely buggered the hard drive so after reading many forums saying that it didn't work I read one that said that someone had told them that sandisk ultra II ones worked (very vague!)
Because I had nothing to lose I went out and bought a 1GB sandisk Ultra II CF card. I then took apart my rio and replaced the hard drive with the CF card. Still not thinking it was going to work I plugged it into my computer and installed the latest firmware (from the rio website) and then HEY PRESTO!!!!!! it works.
I have yet to try an 8GB ultra II card but when I do i will keep you posted.
If you don't believe me then I don't blame you but If you send me a request then I can send you pictures and more details...
Rio will live on
Hope this helps

SOURCE: my rio carbon says "upgrader"
At best, the hard drive will have come slightly disconnected or seek arm may have become stuck. Try giving it a sharp tap and re-try.
The hard drive may be permanently damaged however.
