When I try to update W XP Pro I now get a message asking 'do I want to install this program?' with two buttons, 'Install' & 'Don't Install'. The program name given is 'Microsoft Update'. Clicking either button causes the button to appear depressed but it doesn't come back 'out' again and everything freezes for a while before another message saying there was a problem with the web page then the whole thing repeats again. Microsoft Fixit centre tells me it's fixed the problem but it still doesn't work. The first message box has only started appearing since last week, previously the update just went ahead with no problems ever since I've had XP (ever since it came out). I've tried numerous 'cures' but nothing seems to work. I would really appreciate some help with this as I like to keep everything up to date. Thank you for your help.

SOURCE: Hp Printer CD ROM Problem
Unfortunately, this is a frustrating and widely reported issue. Apparantly the HP software is not compatible with Office.
If you have reinstalled the document viewer.msi file from your cd repeated times and you keep getting popups indicating its failure, you will need to uninstall the document viewer.
Here are the instrucitons, courtesy of Jasdev Singh:
">> If you have installed any all-in-one printer driver software then put the disc in
else follow Step 2:
Step 1:
>> Put the printer disc in and goto Setup folder and search for Document viewer folder.
You
will find two files under that. Double click on DocumentViewer.msi and
install that. if you right click you will get repair also.
Step 2:
>> if you dont have any disc then goto Control panel and select Add/Remove Program.
>> Remove DocumentViewer entry. "
If you can't uninstall from Add/Remove programs or don't find an entry for the document viewer there, go to this link and download the Windows Installer Clean Up utility Download, Install, and Run this application...
">> I am sure you can select DocumentViewer now and hit Remove button.
This will clear DocumentViewer from you computer."
Please also refer to this KB article for additional information about clearing your temp files, etc.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

Did you upgrade the computer from Windows XP to Windows 7? If so, did you uninstall the driver before you did the upgrade? The old driver files may be causing the problem.
To fix, go to this link, and in the search box in the center of the screen type "windows 7" and click on the Search button. Then select the link "ERROR: Cannot communicate with the printer after upgrading to Windows 7". There will be step-by-step directions for resolving your problem.
