I bought this phone unlocked and I couldn't get the IM to work. So I called T-mobile (who I have service through), they gave me the proxy numbers and everything I could possibly need. But all it does now is time out.

this is exact thing happened to me. all i did was call customer service and tell them a friend of mine sold this phone to me and they never gave me the passcode. They unlocked my phone, although they wiped the entire thing.
Go to start-settings-connections-gprs:
Delete the T-mobile settings. Create a new connection labeled MediaNet
Connects to: The Internet
Access Point: wap.cingular
Go to start-settings-connections-proxy:
Delete the t-mobile settings. Create a new proxy called Cingular WAP
Connects From: The Internet
Connects To: WAP Network
