The memory IC to your TV is faulty. Check and replace it. This is an eight solder terminal IC, can be located very near to main system control IC. Even though physical size to this IC is so small, function to it in circuit, when the TV works is great. You must have thofough knowledge in electronics to do this work, because, you might have to enter its service mode option to do some adjustments. This work is very skilled one, as service mode option window, and normal user window are entirely different to each other. Adjusting wrong data value to service mode options might make the TV irreparable, and irresponsive.

I have a 50" philips magnavox tv that changes channels on it own and turns itself on frequently. What is causing this issue?

Do you live with someone who likes practical jokes; even silly ones?

There are a number of companies that make remotes that can mess with someones TV or other remote devices.
I have a watch, as a gag, that will self program its remote to operate any TV capable of this feature. With this watch, I can change channels, power status and even reset the TV to factory default state.
Next time this happens, look behind you.

My rca tv turns off and on by itself

Is there a prankster nearby thast has a remote tuned to your set? As a young lad I used to play this trick on my neighbors daughter.

You should also investigate whether it is timed.. that is has a regular interval or time that it does happen. It could be another appliancwe doing this A/C ,Security system or some other eklectronic device. The dog has the remote under the cushion?
