Hi,
This happens when there is a process still trying to work in the back end.
Try to disable most of the applications which get opened by default when windows starts.
Click on start/run/ and type msconfig. Once the window comes up click on start up tab and disable all.
Now try to reboot the system.
Also hope there is no usb device connected at the time of shut down. This would also make xp hang.

my acer 2920z mode laptop. is always shuting down in a regular basis.. i check the power plan settings and its says there that it will be put on sleep every 5 hours when it is plugged in.. but its shutting down every 1 or 2 hours of use.. kindly please give a assistance.. thanks and have a nice day
1. Unplug AC adapter. Shutdown
2. Remove battery, Connect AC Adapter
3. Start windows7. Remove Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager , battery
4. Shutdown, Remove AC Adapter, Install battery, Reattach AC Adapter.
5. Power up -
Now Plugged in and Charging.
