Hi,I am having a problem with my Compaq V2000. For a while it kept shutting down on me without any heating problem. This happened after not working on it for 3-4 weeks. Now it does not TURN ON. when I plug it to the power I don't show any lights ON at all. I had my Charger checked and there is no problem related to the charger. Could it be the Power Supply or the Mother board? How can I find that out without taking it to shop. It had passed the warranty. :( I appreciate any respond.

Re: Compaq V 2000 Notebook Does not TURN ON
Whell the answer is pretty complicated but however I'll try to give you some info.
Laptops have some safety features on them. When you power up a laptop it does something called POST. (Power on self check) This is a BIOS function and after the laptop is powered (only then the BIOS is brought online) it displays eventual errors on the screen and so on.
However laptops also have some hardware level potections. They use the various LED's on them to display a error code. If the charger wouldn't work properly some of this LED's will power on in a weird configuration, signaling an error code. If no LED, no response, no nothing ..maybe the problem is more simple. An internal faulty connection for example.
You may dissasemble the laptop (if you have some basic knoledge of that, and some proper tools like a multimeter to measure some parameters). After that check the entire area around the DC jack connector for lose connections or burned out components.

This most often means you have a bad cpu or motherboard. When the bios does its post checks it looks for issues and will shut the pc down if all the devices are not funtioning correctly or the CPU reaches critical heat.
Is the machine getting hot when it shuts down? If so, then you may need to clean the fan and heat sink. A dust or dirt build up can hinder the cooling system performance allowing the machine to heat up to a level that kicks in the built in fail safes in order to keep from damaging the processor. Try cleaning them and let me know. We'll go from there.
1) Unplug the laptop.
2) Press and hold down the standby switch under the lid in the upper left hand side of the laptop while pressing down the power key.
You should have full power startup now. Let me know if it worked..
