RED Ghost Image on Samsung 42" Rear projection HDTV (Model - HCN4226W)
My TV just started showing a red ghost on everything. ( Component, Cable, and RCA inputs.) I called the repair shop and they said that the capsule needs to be replaced at the cost of 450 dollars!!!! I bought the TV for 900...... anyways, I tried using the 'perfect focus' feature that samsung has under the convergence menu and it does the green focus and the moves on to the red and it makes a bunch of irregular movements and the returns to the green one and starts all over again.
I can't figuire it out and I have never repaired a TV before, although I am very handy and I'm sure I could figure it..... I just don't know where to start. nay suggestions? Is it a cinvergence problem or bad capsules?
Thanks, Colorado.
I WOULD RATHER THINK IT IS ONE OF THE CINVERGENCE AMPLIFIER & DRIVER IC,S
A REAR PROJECTION TV NORMALY HAS 2 OF THEM AND THEY ARE THE SAME AND NORMALLY THE NUMBER ON THE IC STARTS WITH "STR *****" SWAPING THE TWO AROUND WOULD PROVE THAT YOU GOT A PROBLEM ON ONE OF THEM,THEN JUST GET 2 NEW IC'C
THE SYMPTOM THAT YOU ARE DESCRYBING IS MOST LIKELY THE IC'S
HOPE THIS HELPS

The convergence IC has gone out and is located on the Main bd or the Power supply bd depending on the specific model and must be replaced and a Full convergence alignment must be performed to return your tv to a watchable condition. Only a Samsung trained tech can do this.
we had this exact same issue with our Samsung projection tv. We solved the problem (temporarily) by trading in the cable box for a new one. All colors worked for a while, now the red goes on and off at will... I think we may have had a problem with the cable box AND the tv. Maybe this will help?? Good luck!
when you leave your TV (no matter what kind) and you leave it for long periods of time on a static image or something.. the image tends to burn in to the screen... so changing the glass would be a way to fix it.... the problem is that that kind of repairmen is more expensive and difficult than buying a new set...
