More than likely bios isn't letting it boot, i'd make sure the fan bearing hasn't gone out, if it has you can order a new one

If you need further help, reach me via phone at https://www.6ya.com/expert/joel_63c670a84e9f6a97

thanks for the info .... me being a bit of a computer novice....'bios' whats that? My main concern is that i would have lost the data (photos etc) do you think thats the case? Is there a way to check this bios thing or do i need to take it to a pc repair shop?

when you turn it on it says 'press a specific key to enter 'setup' set up is bios. i doubt it's the hard drive, it may be something as simple as a fan going out

SOURCE: dell xps 420 desktop want go into windows mode or reboot

Try clearing the motherboard state:

unplug power cable
hold power button 15 seconds
release power button
plug in power cable
start as usual

As much as these issues can be as drastic as noted above, this is rarely the case.

finnaly, please post some more info, do any lights come on?

The power light can be different colors and may blink, and there are diagnostic lights on the front (usually marked 1,2,3,4).

SOURCE: My Dell XPS 420 will not turn on. Power light

Hey! Nice Computer! ( At least while it was working! Specifications show some high-end hardware parts)

Steady amber light on the Power On light, means a bad power supply.

The Dell XPS 420 uses the standard ATX style of power supply found in 90% of computers out there.
(Personal computers. Not the Cray Supercomputers!)

This is Dell Support, and the User Manual - Removing and Replacing Parts - part of the manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps420/en/OM/HTML/parts.htm#wp1466871

From Me:

1) Computer unplugged from power, computer case open. TOUCH the metal frame BEFORE you reach inside.
Your body carries Static electricity.
Static will fry out computer hardware components.
You won't see it, or feel it.

Computer unplugged from power, you are safe.
Touch the metal frame Before reaching inside, your computer is safe.

Should you get up for any reason, walk away, then return, Touch the metal frame again)

You either have a 375 Watt, or a 425 Watt power supply.
I would recommend a power supply with more Wattage, and more Amp's on the 12 Volt power rail.

The Dell XPS 420 comes with an Intel Core2 Duo processor, or an Intel Core2 Extreme processor.

These puppy's can use a lot of power when gamin', or other intense programs are being used.

The Nvidia GeForce 8800 Series of graphics cards offered, use a lot of power when maxed out.

The motherboard with the Intel X38 motherboard chipset, uses a lot of power.

I would recommend a 600 watt power supply for a replacement.

My recommendation would be an OCZ StealthXStream 600W

Why?

1) If the temperature of this PSU is kept under 118 degrees Fahrenheit, the PSU can put out 728.8 Watts reliably. (47.9 degrees Celsuis)

2) It has Four - 12 Volt power rails.
EACH power rail can handle 18 Amps.
That's a total of 72 Amps!

3) It has all the power cables you'll need.

A) 20 + 4-pin ATX motherboard power cable
B) 8-pin 12 Volt power cable (8-pin EPS)
C) 4-pin ATX power cable
D) SATA power cables [ 3 ]
E) Peripheral power cables, (4-pin Molex) [ 6 ]
F) 6-pin PCI power cables. [ 2 ]

DELL XPS 420 Fan noise, and goes into sleep mode

Maybe the fan is going bad. Open the case and check it to make sure it is tight by tightening the screws. Also make sure a cable or wire is not hitting the fan blades causing the noise.

Go into the Power Option in the Control Panel and set your Sleep or Hibernate options up higher or set them to NEVER.

Click Start/Control Panel or Start/Settings/Control Panel and look for Power Options.

Alert chipset heat sink not detected system halted dell xps 420

Sounds like your heatsink which is inside the computer and sits on top of the CPU is bad. There will probably be a fan that sits on top of the heatsink.

Look on ebay and purchase one for your system.

I found a new one below on ebay for $14.95 (the link is below)

I have Dell destop model XPS-420 my computer is not getting on NO FAN and no noise please advise me what should I have to do

hi

are you saying the fan is not working ? if that's the case, you need to replace the fan.
get the service tag # located on back of your desktop PC, go to this link below, place service tag in appropriate box . it will give you part numbers for the peripherals of this computer. locate the fan and purchase replacement.this is all you have to do. DO NOT TURN ON THE COMPUTER UNTIL THIS FAN IS REPLACED, or you will damage the mainboard and/or CPU.

Xp420 dell doesnt boot just a solid amber light on mother board high rpm on fan that doesnt slow no picture on screen....?????

Solid Amber light is a No-Boot scenario for all DELL PC. It may be either Power Supply, motherboard, memory or Proc. If you try to call Dell customer support they might try to let you isolate the problem by opening up your pc. But they will replace the parts necessary if they found out that its broken and your XPS is still under warranty.

You can call 1-800-232-8544 be sure to have you Service Tag or Express Service code ready.

Xps 420 keeps freezing or going to blue screen

Same with my Dell Vostro 420. At this rate I will just buy a new PC as I am wasting too much time on this. We tried usual stuff like cleaning inside, making cooler, removing certain virus software, still no luck. I have to restart 4 times a day and keep saving material. Can only restart by turning it off by pulling out power socket.
