Garmin 305 only 'works' when in the cradle. As soon as i remove it, its dead.
When I take it out of the cradle, it just dies. All had been fine but a few days ago 8 minutes into my run it switched off and hasn't worked since. This is the second unit I've had. First one died too. I like the unit, but based on the number of sites dedicated to these failures, they are very poorly made. I can't do the hard reset, it doesn't do anything. In the cradle it just says "battery charging complete". None of the reset options work in the cradle or out. I've changed the firmware down, then back up while in the cradle, again though, dead when removed.
can you explain to me please how to take apart my garmin i have the same model and i need to know how to take it apart...to disconnect my internal battery long enough to reset the system...please contact me ova email at [email protected] or thru aim:toy9cito thanks...

If your 12v power cable has the light on and your are still not receiving a charge to your unit then your powered cradle is probably dead. This is fairly common with the old powered mounts. A replacement can be obtained here http://www.gpscity.ca/garmin-nuvi-3xx-cradle.html.
sounds like the Audio patch cord, i had around 5 of them that do that ...sometimes i hear the music thru one speaker, cracking noise sometimes it works when the wire is twisted, but i would try a new patch cord first.....my patch cord worked fine on some stereo units others break up

Use the allen wrench to remove the battery. Let stand for 5 minutes and replace the battery. It should start fine. Mine has done this 3 times since I purchased it.
I sent my battery back and it was replaced by the supplier. The unit is fine now so the only conclusion I can come to is that it is due to a faulty battery....
You can get a charger that fits in the tiny little charging port, on the lower right side next to the "cradle teeth". But of course you will STILL not be able to sync.
Radio Shack has a set of port adapters, the little yellow one fits. Be SURE to plug it in the correct way around. (Bring iQue to Radio Shack when you buy adapter.)
Common issue. Steps to troubleshoot/solve:
1. Pull off face, press reset tab.
2. If unit wont turn on or if turns off immediately, connect to home computer using mini usb on side of gps (any usb cord that fits will do). This will charge the internal gps battery, which is discharged.
3. You will not be able to see the gps charge indicator while the usb cord is plugged into the unit. To check charge level, disconnect it, turn it on, and note the large "battery" icon.
4 Do you have a dead internal battery? If the gps holds a charge from your computer usb port, you don't.
5. If you have a dead battery, Google DIY replacement. With some soldering it can done for $15 total.
6. If you don't have a dead battery, the issue is charging from the cigarette lighter socket. Your car socket may have blown a fuse (check car manual). Your charger unit may have blown a fuse (unscrew the tip, check fuse inside). Also, some car sockets don't work when the ignition is off. Test yours.
7. There is a good chance the connection of the charger wire to the gps cradle is the problem. Fiddle with that. Replacement cradles are available for the c340 at about $25.
8. If your unit is not charging from the cradle/socket, buy a 12v usb cord. Plug into socket and into usb port of the gps. This is a workaround or alternative to buying a new cradle.
9. IMPORTANT: observe the "battery" icon while driving, esp. if you have doubts about charging. Basically, if you can see the icon, you're not connected to an outside (car or computer) power source. That is, if you can see the battery-charge indication, it means your battery is currently discharging and unless you get another power source to work it will be dead in a few hours.
