My keys were misplaced, and I have ordered a new remote for my 2000 grand prix. Can the new remote be programmed while the car's alarm is still activated? I have tried to deactivate the alarm but nothing I've tried thus far has worked; I am trying to avoid a dealership visit to resolve this problem. I have a working key - so the car is still being driven - but every time the door opens the alarm activates!! Thus the reason for purchasing a new remote to try and turn the alarm off... Just don't know if it can be programmed while the alarm is set!!
Hi Kim, When you ordered the new key the dealer should have asked for the chassis number? That gives them the codes to pre program. so that it should activate and deactivate the alarm, if that is the problem! ? Regards John

This is only a possible solution to your problem. I had similar problem with my car. It turned out that the window locking toggle on the driver door not only prevented the other windows from being opened by passengers but also controlled the door locks. When I unlocked the window control I was able to unlock the door. Another possibility is the armature inside the door has come off the locking mechanism.

If it is the factory alarm it will deactivate when you put the key in and turn it to start the car,if it is a aftermarket add on it will have to be removed from the car.

No I didn't order the replacement remote from the dealership for $80+ - I ordered it off line for less than half the price of the dealerships price...... Thus I just want to find out out to turn off the alarm system.... I have tried the going thru the program mode as suggested by GM customer service - (by removing the Mall Pgm fuse etc.) but of course you can't enter program mode while the car has the alarm activated! Nothing we have tried as of today will turn the alarm off..... and no one can seem to tell me how to do it -- so its off to a lock smith I was told they could deactivate the alarm for half the price of a dealership -- so unless I get any better suggestions - this will be my best bet I guess.....
