There is a little green knob above the ink cartridge that spins non-stop when I turn on the machine; it won't copy while that wheel is spinning, and I can't get it to stop. This has been a problem from the start. Any help is appreciated.
I found if I took out the toner cartridge and reinserted it this problem corrected, but I had to do it almost all the time and now I am getting black lines.

You won't be able to print if one of the cartridges is out of ink. The printer will prime every once in a while thus the need for all cartridges to have sufficient ink levels to prevent damaging the printhead.
Open the ink cartridge cover. If one or more ink cartridges is empty
(for example Black), the LCD shows "Cannot Print (Replace BK Ink)"
or "B&W Print Only."
Press down on the release lever to unlock it and take out the ink cartridge for the color shown on the LCD.
Open the new ink cartridge bag for the color shown on the LCD, and then take out the ink cartridge.
Turn the green knob on the protective yellow cap clockwise to
release the vacuum seal, then remove the cap (1). You must hold the
ink cartridge as indicated in the picture below.
Each color has its own correct position. Insert the ink cartridge in the direction of the arrow on the label.
Gently push in the ink cartridge until it clicks, and then close the ink cartridge cover.
The machine will automatically reset the ink level.

Are you sure you have all the tape and seals removed from the cartridge?
If so it sounds like you have received a defective cartridge.
The other thing to try is to remove the cartridge. Hold it level and shake side to side. Sometimes if those cartridges have been setting on end the ink will pack into the front or back of the cartridge.
Check for tape, shake it front to back , then if those 2 things dont work , replace it. It will have a warranty on it.

hi, CANON PIXMA MP160 All-In-One InkJet
Printer has few common problems. Such as Driver CD
lost, Scanner does not work, Connection problem etc. For find all these software solution
just click here....
Some machines have a lock so the scan head doesn't get damaged, make sure that it is unlocked if your machine has this feature.
Does the color cartridge have ink as well, as some machines do not print if eather of the cartridges is empty.
Good Luck.
that really sounds like a defective toner cartridge. Either there was no developer in the cartridge or the metering blade that limits the ammount that gets onto the roller is bad.
Has to be the toner cartridge. Unfortunatly that may have also ruined the drum and cleaner within the drum cartridge. Return them for an exchange.
The reason it is running and running is that it is trying to read a patch that is developed on the drum and add toner to make a dark enough copy. And that definatly is not happening.
If the laser was not turning on, the machine would come up with a L something code. Besides if the laser was not comming on, the paged would be blank.
You can pretty much eliminate everything but the toner cartridge.
check the drum is seated well or not, check the drum drive lock, check the drum is rotating freely or not.check the chargin g rollor are seated well or not
finally replace the drum and see the result.
best of luck.
Isnt e5 error meaning the cartridge has been previously used before?? Best bet is to hold in both the colour and black copy buttons for about 5 - 10 seconds and this should allow you to print again. If you do not have a copier/scanner, hold in the resume button. (triangle within a circle).
Try cleaning the print connectors on the cartridge housing area with a q-tip. This should resolve your problem, or else try to run ink cartridge test on your copier. Let me know if this fix your problem.
