Some of these tractors have a friction wheel that is driven off of a flat wheel on the bottom of the engine drive shaft. The rubber ring on this friction wheel could be worn out, or it could be out of adjustment.

It sounds like the oil in transaxle is degraded. The transaxle is supposed to be a sealed unit requiring no service but over time the oil will get dirty enough to cause problems like you are describing.Remove the back hitch plate and look at the transaxle it will have a rubber vent hose or a 1/4 alllen wrench fitting on top. You will need to purchase a battery suction bulb from sears automotive and use it to remove as much oil from transaxle as possible. Warm the transaxle up first by running it around, then suction the oil out.Refill with a good synthetic motor oil 15w-50 or 20w-50 like Amsoil or Mobil 1.Do not use transmission fluid or hydraulic fluid. When adding the new oil back fill it to within 1.5 in from the top,be sure to allow this amount of air space in top of transaxle for expansion.

SOURCE: What length belt do I

You can find the model number under the seat by the battery. With that number you can go get the belt at a local lawn mower repair parts shop. And with that number you can find the routing on an illustrated parts drawing by going to a lawn mower/ small engine repair parts website such as or If you can not find it I can tell you, but I would like to glance at the drawing to see if the deck is the one that I am familiar with, so I would need you to send me the model number from the tag.

I hope this helps you get it done.

Hydrostatic want pull hill

Either the belt is slipping in the pulleys ( replace belt ) or the hydro unit has internal wear, if this is the case as the unit gets hotter the issue will become worse due to the oil getting thinner and leaking internally, this would mean a hydro rebuild, or replacement unit

I have Craftsman 42" lawn tractor with the automatic transmission. It runs fine but it is not pulling a grade now. The belt seems tight, what could be the problem?

As you attempt the incline grab the clutch pedal with your heel and pull it towards you if it starts pulling correctly you have a belt problem . If it makes no difference you are having hydro pump problems

the brake mechanism is likely stuck, if you pull the hydro release rod and attempt to push the mower it should free wheel reasonably well, if it continues dragging then the brake shoes are likely seized, even though the arm may be free
