I've had this inverter for about two years now, bought it for a cross country road trip to power my laptop and a couple of other things. I've pretty much liked it. Yes, the fan is a little noisey, yes, you have to use the provided battery clips for heavy loads. But it powers my Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop just fine (and its an old powerhog).

Recently a I let a friend use it with his inflatable mattress air pump during a camping trip.
What I didn't know is his pump has insane wattage, and it fried/bricked the inverter instantly.

Agh! I thought it was a goner, but took the time to look inside the unit. (Which is a solid and sturdy metal case, not plastic as another reviewer indicated). I was thrilled to discover there were some internal fuses. And while the fuses are soldered to the circuit board, if you've done any soldering at all they really are a snap to replace.

If you remove the four screws that hold the end cover plate on the side with the fan. You can remove the end plate and have just about a half inch or so of clearance. The entire lower circuit board will then slide out with firm pressure about an inch and a half (don't try and go any further, components on the other side prevent it).

On the right side (positive/red terminal side), you will see two 25 amp mini-fuses that are directly soldered to the circuit board. If these are blown (you can see through the semi-transparent sides if they still connect), that is most likely your problem. They are easily available from most auto and big department stores (Walmart, Target, etc) in their automotive sections.

I used a 40 watt soldering iron (30 watt should work fine), and applied it to the bottom of the circuit board where the fuse legs poke out the bottom. Using a pair of pliers, I applied a firm steady pressure to the fuse, pulling up, while applying the soldering iron to each of the legs (alternately) of the fuse. The solder melted, and I was able to work the fuse out in a few seconds. I did this for both fuses.

The replacement fuses cost all of $2. I dipped the new fuse legs in flux, then put them in the place of the old fuses. Again I heated the circuit board solder from below, and pushed the new fuse in place. Repeat with the second fuse until it is in place. Flip the board over and add some more new solder until it is firmly in place. Put it back together, and you are back in business! And for a whole lot less than a new inverter.

Most likely a fuse. Check for a fuse on the inverter itself or one inline with the plug. Usually you can screw off the tip of the plug and replace the fuse inside.

If the inverter is blowing the fuse immediately upon plugging in the inverter (before you even plug something into the inverter) you most likely have a short in the 12V power cord. If you have an Ohm meter, you should be able to check the resistance across the two contacts on the 12V plug of the power cord. Wiggle it around some. If you get a very low reading, and especially if it's intermittent, you have a bad cord, which should be pretty easy and cheap to replace. My experience with these cords has been that their quality is pretty poor.
If that is the problem, maybe you can cannibalize a cord from an old CB radio, but here's a fairly heavy duty one on Amazon (they don't give an amp rating though) http://www.amazon.com/Truckspec-TSPSCBH-2CP-12-Volt-Platinum-Replacement/dp/B001JT5QF0

It sounds like the fuse that protects you cigarette lighter is blown.

After you have replaced the fuse, check the voltage again. 0.015vdc would not have powered anything that in manufactured to operate on 12vdc.

When powering anything over about 250W, I would suggest connecting directly to the battery to avoid overloading the lighter circuit.

Does the unit have a fuse. I think i shorted it


Yes, I took this unit apart there are 3 40 amp fuses in the unit. (Similar to blade type car fuses). You have to completely unscrew everything plus take off the top lable and plate to access the other hidden screws

Appropriate size inverter for sump pumps


First...you need to find the amperage on the pump...your inverter is rated for 6.25 Amps...(750/120)...you will need an inverter bigger then the pump..I would suggest at least 1.5 times the size of the pump..bear in mind,..the inverter wasnt designed to start motors...so oversizing is needed..

This type of inverter has large alligator clips on it because the amperage that comes through a cigarette lighter is insufficient and can result in blown fuses and overheating of the socket. Hook this one up directly to the battery without splicing a longer wire to it.

Is this inverter powerful enough?


You are right. This is not enough to operate this freezer. You are going to need a bigger invertor it get it to work properly 900 or 1000 watt should be efficient even though it is not the best way to run the unit. If the unit has a problem you would be replacing the inverter all the time. Just FYI

Look for 3 - 40 amp fuses side by side near the fans, inside the unit

Does item have a fuse? Burned out


i have the same one ...and i'm not seeing a fuse, there may be one internally
does the inverter have strong "burnt wire" smell if so it is probably fried.
