Wirlpool side - by side

Freezer stopped working as did the ref.. I cleaned coil and complete unit. If the compressor is bad or anyother part, is it easy to fix, check and replace? it is only 5yrs. old

  • Anonymous Apr 21, 2009

I have the same basic problem but have checked the relay and find that there is 120VAC between the red and black wires to the compressor. The compressor is hot and the relay kicks in and out like a thermal relay that if too much current is drawn it will deenergize. I did not look further to see if there were additional wires on the back of the compressor. Wires are pretty small going to the relay, but I guess that with this small compressor it will draw probably less than 3 to 4 amps so wire size is probably sufficient. In addition to the relay, any capacitor anywhere that should be checked?----- Thanks, Paul

There is a relay called PTC relay. It is located on the compressor. You need to replace it. First be sure to unplug frig. Remove the cardboard cover that covers most backs of the frig units. Remove the plastic cover that is on the side of compressor. It is held on with a metal clip. Now you should be able to see the relay pry the relay straight off. note the wiring and position of relay. Only three prongs on compressor. Go to a parts house for appliance's and with your make and model number should be able to get a new one. Sometimes this relay starts a noise like clicking off and on to give you a warning. sometimes they just go out.

Cooling quit suddenly in both freezer and fridge side. Pulled out unit and sounds like compressor is running and compressor fan (across coils) is running. Circulation fan in freezer is not running....

First I would check cold control. Thats where you turn it off, if your temp is not warm. it seems
to be defective and not shutting off. If your temp is warm proceed with the following.
I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if freezer control is turned WARMER, which makes the Ref. colder
Also this might be a common Defrost problem, Ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath
Check cold control (thats where you turn it colder)

Freezer part works fine, but the refrid won't cool?

The freezer is the only place that has cooling coils (condensor) the ref side steals air by way of a fan and duct from the fzr side. But in my experience the fzr i the last to go when an ref is low on freon. Also make sure the external coils are clean and the fan is running on the external side (if equip) coils are usually under the ref if it has a fan and is accessed on the bottom back by removing a cardboard access usually black. This cardboard looks flimsy but it is very important to reinstall it. It directs the air flow across the coils. after removing this you can plug your ref up to make sure the external fan kicks on with the compressor if not the fan is bad and needs to be replaced. always be careful with electricity...

GE PSC23NSD SS refrigerator malfunction

Check the cover in back of the freezer for for frost build-up. I think Frost reached the evap fan-blades and stopped it from blowing cold to the ref-side. Contro;s can be confusing. The ON-OFF controls how long the compressor runs, and the other dial how open or choked the airflow from the freezer into the refrigerator. Sometimes it happens that you have that flapper shut and no air is getting moved to the reefer. If frost is on the cover you have dead heater elements on the evap coils or a faulty hi-temp limit switch, which is the disc thingee at the top of the coils. A bad timer also may disallow it going into defrost - think about it. Chris in big bEar

Fridge will not cool properly

You may have a dust build up on the condenser coil. You may notice the jam of the ref door being very warm. This is an indication of a dirty coil (located under your ref) that just needs to be cleaned or your fan motor in the back of the unit may have failed and stopped turning.

Kitchenaid Side by side refrigerator/freezer

when is the last time you cleaned the condenser coils the areas you describe are supposed to be hot there is a loop there to keep the door gaskets dry but should not be too hot pull the fridge out check to see if the fan is running on the compressor then unplug the unit and clean the coils the only other thin that will make it super hot if there is a leak in the low side of the system and has drawn air in see if cleaning the coils fixes it first and we will go from there
