Change DvD for HDD

I tried to change the internal drive for a HDD, but doesnt work !!! I tried different configurations Master, slave, CS.... Why its seems to work only with DVD or CD drives but not with hard disks?, I mean, internally both are IDE.

This is the email they sent me:
QPS was the maker of those devices and the chipset firmware did not support HD, just Optical drives which is why it does not work.
These chipsets have been discontinued and there is no support for them.

Trying to connect a second DVD burner with the old style cable. I already have a second HD on the cable. The system will recongnize one or the other device....but not both at the same time. Why? Any ideas?

Hi Daniel
The problem is that you will have to configure one of the drives as Master and the other one as Slave .
Check both the DVD and the hard drive .Near the IDE cable it should be another connector where you can see these letters on the DVD`s case Ma Sl and Cs .It is a 3 X 2 pins connector .)
The hard drive should have these letters written on the label .
Set Hard drive as Master ( usually it is Master ) and set your DVD as Slave .Put the HDD on the first IDE connector on the cable and the DVD on the second

Change HDD

As long as you have the XP Home key Sticker it will work on either HDD

if it is a laptop you will have to save your pics etc... to an external HDD or Flash or CD DVD in order to reinstall on the new HDD as it will have to be formatted to NTFS and will erase anything on it
........................if it is a desktop you can make the new drive the Master install the operating syatem and then make the old drive a Slave by moving the jumpers on the hard drives to ....(.BOTH to >>>CS Cable Select .....)

or Master on new drive....and Slave on the old drive...........

Try both on CS first .....On the cable from the motherboard you will put the master (New HDD) on the plug that you take out of the original hard drive and the second plug on the cable goes to the old hard drive to make it a slave............If you change the jumpers the position of the Hard Disks does not matter......Your choice Good Luck

I would like to make this a slave so that my 500 GB PATA HardDrive will be the master as that has my operating system and the Plextor PX-716A drive will be the slave?

You need to configure the jumper at the back of the drive as shown in the following picture

Configure the CD/DVD drive as slave, configure the hard drive as Master.

POSITION OF SLAVE/MASTER JUMPER on rear of unit Toshiba-Samsung SH-M522 Combo

You'll find jumper instructions in the user manual which is available on Samsungs website (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP08&prd_mdl_cd=SH-M522C%2FBEBN&prd_mdl_name=SH-M522C&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P ). However, most drives have jumper setting key on the drive label. The choices are usually master or slave or cable select.

Compurt is not recognizing a new LG 22x Internal DVD rec

Change the Master/Slave/CableSelect(CS) jumper on the back of the drive (between the power connector and IDE cable)

STEP 1:
Check that the IDE cable red stripe goes to pin 1 (closest to power plug) flip cable if needed.

STEP 2:
Move Jumper to SLAVE position. reboot. check for drive in os. if it's not there;

STEP 3:
Move Jumper to MASTER position. reboot.

If it's still not working replace your IDE cable and try again

How do you replace proprerly a CD/DVD Drive?

HI there

I belive what you have done is ccaused a conflict on the ide channel that the dvd is on you should check the jumpers on the back of your new device and match it with the setting from your old cd.

you have three options master , slave . or cable select (cs) you can only have one master or one slave on each ribbon cable .

by what you are saying the second device on that channel must be a hard disk if you dont have your old cd drive check what the hdd is set on ie master then set your dvd to the oposite ie slave .

if your hdd is set to (cs) then also set your dvd to (cs)

this should get you going

Need master slave configuration

Hello,

You should have a jumper configuration written somewhere on the front (up) side of the hard Disk ... Look there, or look just around the Pins... Look for M, S, CS (Master, Slave, Cable Select)

I have a western digital (WD1600BB) harddrive that i want to install into my pc so it replaces my 17.2gb one that i have at the moment. I have a windows XP disc, but everytime i hook it up to my computer...

OK... Either your PC uses CS (Cable Select) or MS (Master/Slave) designation to ID drives found on the internal cablesets. Find yours for the 160gb here: http://www.wdc.com/en/images/products/drives/10_pin_jumper.gif

OK, you can't mix types, and you cant put 2 Masters or 2 Slaves on the same cable. Soooooooo

You need to find out what the current HDD uses... so pull the current HDD out, turn it so that you are looking at the backside (where the cable and power plugs in) and look for a group of 6, 8 or 10 tiny pins in a row ( Jumpers)

moz-screenshot.jpgLook where the Plastic pin(s) are if any and then look on the BACK, Top, PCB and Rear cover for the diagram that explains the position of each.

If your current Drive is CS, then just set your new drive to CS and plug it in (on the same cable)
If your current drive is all alone on the cable and there is a free connector hanging loose, it is most likely set to SINGLE MASTER, and will have to be changed to DUAL MASTER... then set your new drive on DUAL SLAVE and plug it in (on the same cable)

If your current drive is NOT all alone on the cable and there is CDROM attached to it too, it is most likely set to SINGLE MASTER, andyou will leave it alone and you will set your new HDD to SINGLE MASTER as well, and put it on the OTHER cable.

You may have to alter your BIOS settings to see the new 160Gb HDD IF your motherboard is capable of handling that size. Press F2 or DEL or Cntl-S or F12 during boot to get there, then make your changes, save and get out

Once you can SEE both HDD in your system, then you either use a program like GHOST and do a bit-by-bit copy of the old HDD to the NEW, and then make IT MASTER and the OLD one SLAVE (and reset BIOS settings to reflect this) or just leave it in there as 2nd BIG HDD with lots of space.

Good luck
