When you turn the tv on, there is just a blue screen with a red pad lock picture in the bottom left corner of the screen. Thsi happened when my husband tried to program our Universal remote after it stopped working on the tv. He tried to program it manually by pushing the channel up button over and over very fast and eventually, it was suppost to start changing the channels and that means its programed. Instead, it "locked" our tv. By the way, our tv is a 20' Haier Flat Screen and according to the internet, the Universal remote that we were using was not even suppost to work on that brand of televisions. But when we bought it, the programming guide had codes for Haier tv's and we had been using it for a few months before this happened. Since we lost the papaer with the codes on it, we had to try it manually and this is what happened.
I had the exact problem...tried a number of things that did not work. My dog "ate" my original remote. After reading your solution I took the universal remote that was programmed to work with the tv and tried holding down each button for a few seconds hoping that one would work like the display button on the original remote. It worked. I have a GE universal remote and the menu/info button worked for me. Again, you need to hold it in for a couple of seconds. Thanks for the help and I hope my added solution helps other people. Claudia in Minnesota

Most likely you will need your owners manual and the original remote to unlock the TV sorry to say.
