The dishwasher functions normally except for the following problem. When it is washing it makes a loud humming/whining noise. The washing cycle periodically pauses and the noise disappears but starts again when the dishwasher resumes washing. I checked the chopper assembly and removed any debris from this area and the sound remains. I also ran throught the diagnostic cycle and the noise is only evident when the wash motor is running. If the problem is in the pump motor or pump sump is there a good way to find out which it is? Any help is appreciated.
It's noisy
If your dishwasher seems noisy, check these:
Water-inlet valve
Motor
Heater fan
Pump
Water-inlet valve
An aging water-inlet valve can sometimes fail slowly, rather than all at once. It can shudder on and off rapidly, causing the incoming water lines to shake, rumble, and rattle--sometimes violently. If yours is doing this, replace the inlet valve.
Motor
If it's the motor that's noisy, either of these may be the "culprit:"
Heater fan
If the heater fan bearings are rusted or worn, they may squeal, or scrape loudly during the drying cycle. If this is the problem, replace the fan motor. Alternatively, the fan blade may be loose. If so, you need to replace it.
Pump
Small fruit pits, toothpicks, and fragments of glass sometimes get stuck in the pump. When this happens, open the pump and remove the debris. The pump is usually mounted directly to the motor, then attached to the bottom of the dishwasher.
To get to the pump, you usually need to remove the lower rack, the spray arms, and the spray arm support from the inside of your dishwasher. A dishwasher pump isn't obvious. Look for an impeller--a round, plastic fan blade-type device that spins around and pushes the water toward the drain. When you can see the drain impeller, you should be able to see the clogging debris.

I've got the same issue with my whirlpool dishwasher, model GU1200XTLS. If I find out anything, I'll let you know. Have you received any insight?

Our Whirlpool Gold just started making this same annoying noise about a week ago.
Exact same problem and it drives me crazy to hear it keep humming and humming. Please find a solution to this noisy issue.
Same problem, loud intermitent whining and humming just started after 12 months and sounds like the pump is going out... also had to replace tips on racks with plastic caps...
we have the same problem, LOUD Noise during the washing cycle, quiet rest of the time. My machine is only 2 yrs 3 months old. Called Whirlpool repair and they said it is probably the pump which will need to be replaced. I am not very happy as it isn't that old. I let you know. KathyinAustin
Same symptoms; I have to wonder how longer other's symptoms lasted before the motor was replaced or failed.
