My laptop no longer recognizes my external hard drive. Device Manager gives me an error code 10.

Connect the Maxtor to a different computer, to see if the device works in some other computer.

If the warranty is still valid, exercise the warranty to get a replacement.

If the warranty has expired, disassemble the casing, and disconnect the USB-to-disk-drive interface from the disk-drive.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some other computer, to see if the USB-to-disk-drive interface is the part that failed.

If all else fails, search online for commercial "data recovery services" -- for a large amount of money, they will disassemble the disk-drive, repair it, just long-enough to copy your files.

My Maxtor 3200 has a gren light that is now blinking and the computer cannot start the drive. Code 10. What does this mean?

I had this problem. I learned that the power supply was defective. You can purchase a 12V 2amp power supply. This solved my problem. My green light was coming on but my computer didn't recognize the drive and I got the same Code 10 cannot start drive. I purchased a 12V 3amp power supply. It doesn't hurt to have more amps but you need at least 2amps.

I have a Maxtor 3200 and it isn't showing up on either my desktop or laptop in My Computer and the desktop only shows it in remove device safely and my laptop isn't showing it anywhere

Hello,

While it's attached to the desktop try: Right-Click on Computer or My Computer and select Manage. In the window that comes up you will see Disk Management, select it and wait a few seconds then look through the right hand side. The first drive listed will likely be your boot drive. If it shows up there but is unallocated report that back. If not take it to the PC store nearest you and ask the technicians to move the HDD in the passport to a new shell for testing, if that works buy the new shell.

If neither of these works the drive may be damaged, if you need the files that are on it and it seems to be damaged, report back here with your Country, State and City and I will locate the nearest Data Recovery pro and refer you in.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Computer suddenly does not recognize my external drive

I assume you have look at the Microsoft Knowledgebase article?

You can also check this troubleshooting article.

You might need to force reinstallation of some devices, the external HDD at least, but maybe also the USB controller device in the Device Manager.

Worst case scenario, open the disk and connect the HDD internally (IDE/SATA depending on the interface).

My maxtor 200GB drive is not recognized by my CPU anymore!

Hi Crkinard.. i think you shuld first find out whether the problem is with the external device or your computer... so check if the device is recognised by another system... as you have been using the device dor couple of years i think yours computer's drive for external devices should have been corupted.. so check out the device with some other computer.. if it is recognised in that computert then you can easily reinstalled the software for your device again..
