Question about Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer
It printed once and then saya offline. Both my computers are wielessly conected to the printer.
I had this problem today with my wireless Brother MFC-990CW using Windows 7, and when I went to see what s printing, then printer, it wasn t showing that I had checked the use printer off-line
So, on my pc I went to the start button then chose:
- Double click your printer
- New print drivers will start to install
- Right click the icon that is a copy made of your printer setup
- Set this as your default printer
I was then able to print and my printer didn t show as being off-line anymore. This is a lot easier than having to uninstall and install the printer again using the disc.

Follow the steps below to resolve this issue:
STEP A: Verify the Brother machine is powered on and there are no errors
1.If your Brother machine's screen (hereinafter called LCD) is blank, the machine may not be powered on. Check the machine to see if it wakes from sleep mode.
If it does not, then make sure it is plugged into a working socket and any power switches are turned ON.
NOTE: If you are unable to power on the machine, then this solution does not apply. Go to Brother Troubleshoot this hardware issue. 2.Check the LCD for any error messages. An example would be "Paper Jam" or "Ink/Toner Empty". If the LCD shows an error, troubleshoot the error to clear the issue indicated.
STEP B: Make sure the printer is connected to the computer
Try connecting it directly to the computer and not via a hub.
Print the network configuration page to check the IP address.
> STEP C (Windows): Make sure your Brother machine is set as the default printer
> STEP C (macOS): Make sure you are using the correct Printer Driver for the Brother machine
STEP C (Windows): Make sure your Brother machine is set as the default printer
Open the printer folder and make sure there is a check mark on your Brother machine's icon:
(Windows 8 or later)
1.Open the Control Panel. (Click here to see how to open the Control Panel.)
2.Click Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.
Click Start > Devices and Printers.
If the check mark is not on your Brother machine, right-click the icon for your Brother machine and select Set as default printer.
STEP D (Windows): Delete all printer jobs from the Devices and Printers window
(Windows 7 or later)
Right-click the icon for your Brother machine > See what's printing > Printer > Cancel All Documents.
If Cancel All Documents is gray out like below, click Open As Administrator. Enter the password for an administrator and click Yes.
STEP E (Windows): Check the printer status in the Devices and Printers window
If the printer status is Offline
(Windows 7 or later)
Right-click the icon for your Brother machine > See what's printing > Printer > Use Printer Offline (removes the checkmark).
If Use Printer Offline is gray out, click Open As Administrator. Enter your administrator password, and then click Yes.
If the printer status is Paused
(Windows 7 or later)
Right-click the icon for your Brother machine > See what's printing > Printer > Pause Printing (removes the checkmark).
If Pause Printing is gray out, click Open As Administrator. Enter the password for an administrator and click Yes.
STEP F (Windows): If a copy of your Brother machine's icon (For example: Brother -X (Copy 1)) is listed in the Devices and Printers
A copy of your printer with the same printer name may be created if you:
To check which printer driver is working, do the following:

Click Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.

2.Click Printer Properties.
3.Change the printer name in the Printer Properties window, and click OK.

If Full Driver & Software Package is not available for your models, select CUPS Printer Driver or Printer Driver.
8.The printer is now available in the Printers section.
9.Select Quit System Preferences from the Apple Menu.

SOURCE: printer online then offline
My first solotution was to reinstall the printer as a new printer. But that is uncessary. The fix is as easy as changing the IP address the in Port.
The problem is the the IP address for your wirelss is not static. and when it changes, the printer does not recognize the new IP address. When this occurs. go the the printer folder ( in the control panel) and click on 'add new priter'. Then select 'add a network wirless printer . NO NEED TO INSTALL THE PRINTER...you just want to see the IP address.
Note the IP address.
GO to the printer, click on the right mouse and select 'properties'
Click on Port
You will see the current port already highlighted.
Click on ' configure port' and change the IP address under "printer name or IP address.

The solution, and it took me a long time to find the simple solution, is to right click on your printer, click properties, click the ports tab and click on your Brother printer and click on configure port (or you can delete the existing one and then add another one). What you want to do is update the IP Address. The problem is that the printer does not have a static IP address, it is dynamic. If you want to confirm that, go to your printer and press the reports button and print out the network configuration report. Your IP address will show on that. It's really the last digit in the IP address that changes. This will absolutely solve your problem. Good Luck!

You could try to use static ip to remove possible problems with dns retrieving:

I assume it's turned on and connected to the router.
Sometimes with DHCP, the IP address on the printer will change. I end up going into the router table to see what IP addresses are assigned where. Invariably I'll find my network printer has changed. Find the printer and write it down.
In Windows, Go into Printers> choose the Brother and right click to check Properties. Look for Ports and change the IP address as needed. It will come back online.
