We tried to let the kids watch a movie and it would not play on the screen. The DVD player is playing the disc, the screen is on and everything is hooked up, but I still can't get the movie to play on the screen. We switched through all the AV modes, still nothing.

Heavily used discs have caused many of the most common DVD player problems, for example, the DVD player reading errors as well as jerky/choppy DVD playback. Take the disc out of the player and visually check if there are any scratches on it, or play the DVD in another DVD player. Before you throw the scratched DVD away and buy a new one, fix the scratched DVD using toothpaste or convert the scratched DVD to digital files to play smoothly on TV/PC.
it could be the disc itself dvds really don't age that well a common problem is that one day they just decide to freeze and stop working even though they had only been played a few times the most extreme would be your situation. I would suggest trying newer dvds out if same problem occurs then it is a problem with the dvd player.
Usually most DVD's play movie trailers and sometimes advertisement before the movie will play. Once the ads or trailers are done it should go to the menu screen and at that point "play" or something like that should be underlined. If it is you can press play or select on the DVD player then the movie should start : )
Try another DVD. If problem persists and it does not work with any type of DVD, whether recordeable burnt DVDs or original pressed DVDs then your unit is bad - either dirty lens or the laser diode is bad.

Might be the type of movie - some of them are only able to play "G" ratings. Try this: click <play> 1234 <play> It will likely unlock the dvd that is in and will begin to play. You will have to do the 'code' each time, or there's an unlock program you can purchase.
please try to clean the optical unit (laser). There are special dvd disc cleaners for this purpose or you can ask the technician to do the cleaning for you.
If you need more info please advice.
