I had something similar happen to my sony TC-WE405 tonight, very annoying. Tape wouldn't turn, then the door was stuck. I gently opened the door and got the tape out but now the player won't play tapes on either side. Either spins for a few seconds or rewinds but it won't play the tape and the tape gets stuck every time. If someone knows how to fix this let me know ... I'll fix it. In the meantime, I picked up another player because the repair bill will be more than the player I just bought cost. BH had some demo models for $75 dollars, but I'd like to fix my old 405 model and keep it as a spare. I'm working on a documentary film so being without a cassette player isn't really an option for me.

If the cassette door/slider on your Sony CMT-HPX9 stereo system will not open, it could be caused by a few different issues. Here are a few things you can check:
Check the release button: Make sure that the release button is being pressed properly and that it is not jammed or stuck. If the release button is not functioning properly, the door will not open.
Check the door lock: Make sure that the door lock is not engaged. Some models have a door lock switch that can prevent the door from opening.
Check the tape inside: Make sure that the cassette inside the deck is not jammed or stuck. This can prevent the door from opening.
Check the mechanism: Make sure that the mechanism that opens the door is not damaged or jammed. If the mechanism is damaged, the door will not open.
Check for debris or dust: Make sure that the cassette deck is clean and free of debris or dust, as this can cause the cassette to get stuck and the door not to open.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, I would recommend contacting a professional technician or Sony's customer support for further assistance.
if one reuses the tape often, ive found that the tape stretches and no longer covers the entire record path (or play path) , i still have a few cassette and reel to reel decks that I still use , and since the tapes are hard to find now I keep reusing the tapes more and more 4 the same thing , I guess its been like in the past year ive seen this tape stretching thing happen now
Mine did that - you will have to patiently keep pressing the clear / stop / pause / etc and even power cycle a few (or many) times and finally you will hear the mechanism release the cassette. Once you hear that - you will be able to eject the cassette. After that go replace the belts.
Are both sides not staying shut? If it's only one side, look to see if the latch is broken. You should see an arm move when you press down the eject button - while the door is open, press the eject button and see where the arm moves. You should see a hook that catches the door and keeps it closed. It could be broken, or just jammed. Look at the other side of the deck and see it it looks like it's working the same. Unjam the latch arm if it's stuck, or replace it if it's broken.
Sony DCR HC 42
I have the same problem as gskillman
Sony says it qualifies for a fla rate repair -- $201 plus taxes!!! Say what? This camera is only a couople of years old and has hardly ever been used.
i had the same problem of not opening the cassette doors and not running with my sony tc wr535. After I repaced the belts myself with new ones it did run fine! :-) An original sony(!) rubber belt set for the two decks costed me 23 euroos incl pp.
