You never actually asked question.

is this a tape space issue, (compression not up to par)
what?

why not ask at HPE. its an enterprise system Business.
why ask in the toy section here./. and not real HP

here is real HP. (i have Proliant servers)
https://www.hpe.com/us/en/support.html

ask on the real HPE forum first. bet wise do that and NOT HERE.
create an account (free)
the look on the hpe forum
here.
see all those other wise users asking in the right place, yes.

SOURCE: How to configure or enable

The L&TT support ticket contains drive configuration information such as whether hardware data compression is enabled or not.
Use L&TT to pull the ticket then look in the Drive->Drive Configuration section for details.
Here's an example:
|__ Drive
||__ Data compression : Enabled
||__ Current block size : Not available
||__ Detect WORM tampering : WORM not supported
||__ Reads after WORM tampering : WORM not supported
||__ Media removal (software controlled) : Allowed
If data compression is not enabled then it is likely that it has been turned off by the backup application. Check the options in your application to ensure that software compression (done by the server) is turned off and hardware compression (done by the drive) is turned on.
Data compression can be turned on in the drive by

  • The application ( the application will usually override the drive configuration so configuring the application correctly is of prime importance)
  • Resetting the drive
  • Power cycling the drive
  • Using the L&TT Set Drive Configuration utility (use the options to enable compression -see the L&TT user guide below)
NetBackup usersCaution NetBackup will turn off hardware compression in the drive at the end of each backup, so when you look at it with Library and Tape Tools it will be off. This is actually normal for NetBackup, so please check the configuration of NetBackup to make sure that compression is configured correctly. In this case see 'Measure Compression Ratio' (go back one level) as that will show whether compression has been in operation in the drive.

HI TLD tape drives are writing with low transfer rate. we are using veritas netbackup 6.5.3 verision

Hi,
The low throughput may be because of many factors. Check the below factors.. It could improve your throughput.
1. Restart and disable any antivirus firewall on both backup server and client. The network utilization should be more than 20% in the master backup server. Just to make sure there is no hinderence to data flow, try copying a single big file (a 1Gig ISO file will do) from any server to backup server, the network utilization should shoot above 10% then. And will vary to 20%. If it is steadt @ 8 or 10% then firewal is the culprit. Disable it.
2. Team 2 or 3 NICs in the master backup server. Teaming at the client will also help.
3. Check the total size of data to backup, and the average size and number of files to backup, if the average size is in the range of KBs and the number of files is very high. Then only the 'Flash Backup Liscence" will only help.
Please come back and post the ratings for my solution if it turn to be of any use to you. Thnx

if you "have not" using Backup Software (e.g. Symantec Backup Exec, CA), you can try this IBM LTO-4 driver for Win2K.

How can I turn on/off hardware compression in Windowns 2003 Server

Hardware compression is more efficient and faster than software compression and under normal constancies you won't want to do that. Having said that if your drive allows it you would need to download and install a software utility made by your tape manufacturer. That what you will use to turn off that functionality; not a setting on the PC or the backup software. Bottom line is you will need to talk to IBM support. Probably not the answer you wanted to hear but I just went through this with HP a few months ago. They have a general purpose utility that turns off the hardware compression, does a drive analysis, a cheapo write current alignment, firmware update and a few other neat tricks.
