Either the child lock is activated or the unit needs a reset by unplugging it.

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

You can download Kitchenaid owner's manuals and installation instructions here to find out how to turn off the child lock.

I have an Emerson 900W Microwave MW8999SB and it will randomly assign DEF1 and the rest of the keypad is difficult or not functioning. None of the quick buttons work, and only the 30-second button works....

Pressing the Clear/Pause button works. Sometimes. Most of the time, about a microsecond after pressing Clear/Pause, it goes right back to def1. Most of the time, pressing ANY button doesn't work. Usually takes me 10 to 20 tries to get anything to work. My microwave is about 3 months old. I will never buy Emerson again.

Error code F2

The error code "F2" that appears on your KitchenAid microwave refers to a keyboard failure/short on the front button panel or loose keypad connector

Attempt the following to clear error:
Check keypad connector for firm connection.
Press "Cancel" after the error code is noted, if error code returns after 60 seconds, replace keypad ( also called touch pad or membrane switch ).

Best of Luck with the microwave.

Why does my microwave display a lock? I am unable to perform any other functions. It is plugged in properly and no circuit breakers have been tripped.

your keypad has a control lock, usually you press 1 or 2 buttons for a few seconds and it will lock your control, check your keypad for a small picture of a lock and hold that button until the icon on your display goes away or just read your owners manual or download one from the manufacters website

Microwave is beeping, lock comes on, F2, just keeps beeping by itself

F2 on a KitchenAid mike usually means a Keypad short. Beware if it is a KHMS155LSS, it can self start on its own with a KeyPad short. A real stunning defect.

Microwave/Convection Oven has mind of its own: turns to Crisp mode on its own.

Yes this is a touchpad issue. As you have noted the crisp button is stuck and this is the cause of this. You can try removing the keypad and push up the pressed button. If its jammed then replacing it is the only way.
