Many times, Cam Gear in VCR gets Stuck due to its age (Loose Belt most time).

Or,

The Cassette Housing is off Track (Usually Bent, or Toys inside!!!)

Solution, if you are not all thumbs,

1) UN-PLUG first!!
2) Get Alcohol Pad Ready.
3) Open Back Cover,
4) Clean the Belt on Worm gear (Usually Side of the mechanism towrds back).
5) while at it, Make sure to Dust with Air Aerosol (like ones that you use for computer)

50% of time this will Fix the Problem!!

Err on display when insert tape, no functions work.

Two things. First there is some damage to the tape transport mechanism. Only a good look around will confirm this. Secondly a faulty mode switch.

VCR plays 15 seconds, TV shuts off. Same without tape inserted

Sounds like a typical Switched Mode Power Supply fault, or an internal thermal fault that is shutting down the power supply, over & over. Really you need to get it serviced. You need to get a firm "Quote" for repair, remember these days repair can often exceed replacement cost.

I inserted a tape into the VHS slot. It runs through the film but without coming on the screen or any audio. It will not eject the tape. The door opens and closes and it starts running the tape again. ...

the tape is now jammed. stop trying to get it out because it will be destroyed. To rescue the tape now without damage, the tv-man has to open the set and from there un-stick this tape. after that a service is needed in the belts of that machine. The set now is in the middle of this process and maybe this symptom creates the set to shut down after some seconds after because the microprocessor is protecting the complete set integrity.

Stays on for 5 seconds, thinks it has a DVD or VHS tape in

I am afraid the set has a bad or broken tape transport, or better known as a bad tape carriage.

TV keeps shutting off after 10 seconds

It's possible from what you described that your center LED or prisim was broken when the tape was extracted. Like many others these units depend on a series of startup checks and one being the tape path. On the play table of the VCR is a center prisim/LED and two light sensitive diodes on either side of the tape loading assembly. If these diodes do not detect the infared beam the unit will go into shutdown. I'd check there and let me know. Bill
