Lads ye're all I work in an 'ink place' and the u051 fault is a fault indicating that the offending cartridge is electrically dead, this is caused by the clever little program in the canon machine that writes info to the cartridge to make it'dead' so it cant be re-used ! possible solution is to get refilled before printer thinks it empty !!

A refilled cartridge will always show that the ink supply is low or empty. Just ignore it and go on. I would also learn to re-ink your own cartridges but don't overfill as the cartridge will leak. If this happens, clean the print head on a soft cloth, reinsert the cartridge and do a print head clean. Should be OK after that.

Hi did you try using an original? There could be a few reasons for the u051 message: 1. Refill inkt not compliant 2. Refill inkt busted your printer 3. Your printer thinks that there is no inkt (reset press button next to on/off) I also have this problem but I am gonna try original inkt later (hope it's not broke). Do you already know what your problem was?

Hi
I have a Canon PIXMA MP170. I refill old ink cartridges myself and get an error message all the time saying ink volume unknown. I just press the OK button and ignore it. If this doesnt work I use 2 original Cannon ink cartridges and re-fill them alternately, so that the computer thinks it is a new cartridge each time.
Hope this helps you.
