When plugged in, makes beeping sound; won't come on.
We were watching television, and suddenly without warning the screen just goes black and an odd beeping could be heard. Now, when plugged in, all it will do is beep. I'm not an expert or anything, but this doesn't seem like a typical problem. Any ideas?

Try unplugging everything and then plugging it back in. When my xbox had the "ring of fire" my brother asked me to fix it and I just unplugged and re plugged it worked and came back to life. (be careful that you either have the instuction menu for setup of you can remember where all the plugs go, otherwise you'll have to right down what goes where or else you may get confused and never be able to fix your poor television)
Your inverter is failing. Under battery power there is not enough DC power for the inverter to convert to High voltage AC power and it goes black. Even under charging, there seems to be evidence that the inverter is failing because there it is unable to consistantly convert the needed power. Check the cables on the back of the display and change your inverter.
