After year of good service my Sony RDR-VX500 has ceased recording even though the red recording light is on. Using Sony DVD-R media. There is no data being transferred to the media.
Player works without a problem.
Also found unable to transfer VHS to DVD with same symptom.
Final question...is there any encryption issue when downloading a movie from cable TV? Have d/l a number over the years, but thought maybe this could be the problem with these recent unsuccessful attempts?
Any idea what might be going on?
Thanks for any ideas.
I have two rdr vx500's neither one will record on dvd-r (even sony brand!) yet they used to work on -r's Now they will still work on - or + rw and +r. I suggest you do what I am going to do. NEVER BUY SONY PRODUCTS AGAIN
Make sure the DVD-R is 8x or SLOWER. They are difficult to find these days. The unit will not not give any specific warning when a faster disc is used, it just doesn't work.
The burner is simply an IDE drive, so it is upgradeable, should you wish to risk that route.

On most DVDs there is a small hole under the tray where you can insert a straightened paperclip, push in and it will manually open the tray. If not if you can try GENTLY prising the tray open by inserting screwdrivers on both sides of the tray with the power off
Sorry David you'll need to get a replacement remote. Not the answer you probably want but that's the only way you're likely to close the sessions, unless someone has written some software that can do this. I had a problem with my funai with unclosed sessions and I had remote but laser needed adjusting
DVD-Rs do work with the RDR-VX500 ...... I had not recorded on mine for a few months after I ran out of the last batch ....... then I tried recording on the newer Sony DVD-Rs I had ...... would not record on DVD-R ..... turns out the instructions say the recorder will not work with any DVDs faster than 8x .... It looks like it's recording but it doesn't ..... then I noticed the newer DVDs were 16x ...... found an old 8x and tried it and it works fine ..... turns out the unit won't record slower on a 16x, it just won't record at all ...... get 8x and you'll be ok
