Right 2 inches on edge of screen are darker than the rest of the screen

We've got a Samsung HDTV with DLP, and I recently noticed that the right two inches on the edge of the screen are noticeably darker than the rest of the TV. We can still see the images on the TV, they are just dark. What could be causing this? Is it something can fix? Thanks!!

It's noticable on all inputs and is thinner at the top than the bottom. The TV is only about a year old.

(Thanks so much for trying to figure this one out!)

I have a 20 month old Samsung HLR5668WX/XAA that except for the left vertical 20% of the screen, the rest became very dark. I can make out the images behind it, but just barely. For the next few days, I turned off/on the set after a few minutes every time it happened and the picture came back to normal. Then eventually the problem became permanent. Thinking it was the lamp, I replaced it, but the problem still exists. In addition, for a few months, the set has been making an intermittent grinding noise that goes away when I turn off/on the set as above. Its frequency seems to be increasing. Does it sound like the color wheel is bad? The fan perhaps? Something much worse (crossing my fingers)? Please let me know. Thanx in advance. Tom

Here is what the screen looks like.

    More updates.

The set now is making the grinding noise starting about 15 minutes after being turned on. The left bright 20% started to expand to about 45% with some vertical lines in it. At its height, the vertical line seem to become convex toward the right. Here is the image when it expanded to 35%. It eventually settled back down to the previous image of 20%.

When I turned it off, the grinding noise started to wind down and I noticed what looked like a map of California on its side against otherwise black background in the center of the screen. When the noise died down after about a minute, the map disappeared. I heard the hum of the fan click off after a few more minutes.

  • Anonymous Feb 08, 2007

If you could get me the complete model number HLR?? If its a 50 inch it will be HLR50xxxx if its 42 it will be HLR42xxx.. etc...Then I can do a little research for you. Make sure it is the complete model wich is placed on the back and also the right hand side of the TV. It will be something like HLR50xxxx/XAA

Is this a perfectly straight line where it is dark? or is it maybe larger towards the top or bottom? It is noticable on all inputs (av1,av2 etc..) or even the antenna input. If its perfectly straight then probably what they call a bad DMD (digital micro device) board. Thats where almost 1 million little mirrors live.
