Black Square in center of screen

Sharing our solution to this problem: We had a black square that appeared in the middle of our TV screen and we couldn't figure out how it got there. It seems that our closed caption was turned on to the text mode. To make the black square disappear all we had to do was go to the menu and select closed caption and change it from text mode to off. All better! The kids must have been pressing buttons again!

Fabulous. We went out and bought a new DVD player thinking that was the problem. I should have read this sooner.

Thanks for posting this solution, it really helped solve a mysterious issue with the unexpected black square in the middle of the screen. I must of rolled over on the remote when I fell asleep and changed the display to closed caption, thanks again.

Black screen

I have a Sharp Tv that had the same problem with a large brownish or black square right in the middle of the screen. It only left about an inch around the edges that you
could see the picture moving in behind the big black block or square.I have DISH sat-elite and the book recomending that I check and see if the "caption settings" were on
or off. They were on. I turned the caption settings off and the large square diappeared.

Black square in middle of screen about 25in X 25 in

If a black square appears on the screen and you can see the picture around the edges, it means that the closed captions are on and set to "TEXT". Go into the TV's menu, navigate to the closed captions page and set the captions to OFF.
