My nuvi 780 suddenly won't power on. Used it this morning and then a short while later it's broken!

    My Nuvi 780 powered on like normal when I started my car. I drove 3 minutes to the store and turned off my car, turned my car back on and noticed the GPS didn't auto-power on... Haven't been able to get it to power on since.

Solution A:

1. Disconnect from power source (automobile cradle and/or usb cable)
2. Slide the power button right into the lock position.
3. Slide the power button to the left and hold it for 10 seconds.
4. Your unit should have powered on after you released the power button

Solution B:

1. Disconnect from power source (automobile cradle and/or usb cable)
2. Slide the power button right into the lock position.
3. Apply light pressure anywhere on the touch screen with your finger.
3. Slide the power button to the left and hold it for 10 seconds.
4. Your unit should have powered on after you released the power button

My Garmin Nuvi 780 will not stay charged. also i am unable to charge it while I drive.
The Nuvi 780 is an older GPS. Most likely, the battery needs to be replaced due to age. Many lithium-Ion batteries are only good for 2 years. More information can be found here:

Please have the battery replaced by a professional. We have repaired many units from failed battery replacements by customers. Often other things get broken in the process, sometimes beyond repair.

Why won't my Garmin Nuvi 780 charge?
A couple part answer here. The USB pin out for the Garmin is strange. If it goes into PC mode, then the cable is got the wrong pin out for the unit. Try different cables until one works.

If you can get a full charge on the unit and the battery does not provide at least an hour + of battery use, then the battery needs to be replaced. Amazon sells replacement battery kits with instructions. You just have to make sure you order the right one.

I had the same problem. When you have your nuvi plugged into your cigarette lighter it doesn't charge. Your battery is probaly near dead. I called Garmin and they told me to plug it into my computer via the usb cable. Turn the Garmin off and let it charge for several hours. That did the trick

I have no sound on my garmin nuvi 780. i've hardly used it...
This same thing happened on my nuvi 780 and I just had to go into settings and re-select English as the language and it started working just fine.

My GARMIN stop working I plug it to my car socket and it would not come on.
Same, it worked in the morning, then after lunch, it would not come on. Totally dead. I check the cable and it is working. I have a backup cable too so I know it isn't the cable.

No reset on my Garman!!!
Try holding the power switch to the left for 8 seconds, then switch on (soft reset). If that doesn't work, try a hard reset; remove the SD card, hold the bottom right corner of the screen and keep it pressed while you switch the power on. This resets all user data, but if you haven't used it yet, it won't be a problem. Good luck

Garmin nuvi won't turn on
folks, the garmins have an on-board battery that needs to be powered up (at least occasionally) via the usb port - like from your computer. just using the dc car power cord does nothing for this battery. i've had this exact same problem on both my 760 and 780 nuvi units. fixed it using the usb charge. seems to run down differently for all the various nuvi models. my regular charge will hold for 7 hours on my old 660, my 760 and 780 work about 5 hours. my 'power up' failed on the 660 after 10 months with no internal battery charge, but the 7xx models only took about 5-6 months to 'fail.' hope this helps. jack b :-) in midland, tx usa
