Image too big for screen

I was at a friends house & on his Sony Wega (I think it is the 50" model) it looks like the HD image is cropped a bit to fit the screen (e.g. can't see the scores of football games). The full image does show in the PIP insert. The Wide Screen mode selection does not have "full" available (greyed out). video source is via HDMI from the HD Cable box.

Any idea what to do to fix it?

I have the same tv.
On your remote push menu, then go to settings, and then screen. Put the auto wide to on. And keep the picture mode on normal, not the zoom or wide zoom. If its in HD it will fit the screen. If its not in HD it will crop the sides. This worked for me, hope it works out.

I have a 50' Sony Grand Wega red bar on top of screen

Well this is an LCD projection TV and it sounds like one of the polarizer filter has gotten out of place so you are seeing at the top of your screen the unfiltered image of the LCD panel.
Will need to go into a shop to get repaired. Call and get an estimate of repair. Actually shouldn't be too bad of a repair cost.

Static line

it might sound strange but i think the screen has dropped. I have seen this happen before, is it just one line or 2 as the screen is fitted in the shield, its held by a thin rubber sometimes it can drop when the tv is being moved about or in a lot of vibration like moving it about in a car. now this may sound strange but the last time i fixed one i used 6 match sticks and clean them up and put them in the screen housing and it keep the screen in place after that. but beautiful when removing the screen case as you can inadvertently damage the screen, the screen is only a thick as a bit of cardboard. i suppose you could even put the tv upside down on the bed or something soft and wiggle the screen back into place. this would not damage thew tv and you will not have to take it apart.
