I have an HP Pavilion a1330n. The DVD Rom drawer keeps opening and closing every few seconds. It may stop for a short while but then starts again constantly & is driving me mad. The Computer is about a year old (give or take a couple of months eith way -cannot remember when exactly I purchased it & cannot find the blasted receipt!!!)
I have tried a variety of virus scans all to no avail & wonder whether it may be a hardware problem rather than a software issue.
Any ideas??????

Re: DVD Rom Drawer
This is a sure sign that the drive is faulty or the ide connection.
Try a different ide connector from the other ide cable in your computer if you are able.

A stuck drawer indicates a jammed mechanism or the presence of a mechanical drawer lock.
Locate your DVD player's manual Eject button. It is usually a small hole located underneath the DVD drawer.
Insert a stiff wire-such as a paperclip or safety pin-into the hole. Push gently and the drawer should open partway. Gently pull the drawer the rest of the way open.
The most likely cause is damage, which should be seen with the eye. It could be a belt, broken cogs/teeth in the sledge mechansim, or a micro leaf switch bent out of place.

Unless you can do electronic repair yourself and have the schematics for the drive it will be far cheaper and easier for you to simply replace it. Any DVD drive for computers will fit in there. I would buy a new one rather than used so you make sure and get the software with it. Replacing the drive is a 30 minute job at most.
The trouble started with an error to close and open the DVD drawer. It indicated "close" when the drawer was open, or "no disc" when the DVD was inside, and I had to try many times before I get the right response and go on with the procedures. But then it also started playing just a few MP3 tracks and stopping to work, showing again the inserted DVD data. Later H02, and then H07 and STOP. It doesn't even start playing stuffs, movies or MP3 tracks!
