Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera
Hi! First, I'm sorry my english is a little poor, in from Quebec, Canada. I've decided to get myself a project to do just for fun : I've bought a Canon PowerShot S1 IS defective on ebay and i've decided to try and fix it. I've already ordered another one so I could mix up the parts to get one working (and if not i'll get a third one, it's less expensive than tone that works anyways!). To give you a little background, i'm 18 and right now i'm a leading tech at a staples store and finishing up higher studies in computer science. I'm also a photography lover but with my limited budget I could only afford a Eos 300d. That said, i'm confortable with electronics and i'm a patient guy so time doesn't matter. Now let's get to the point, i guess you don't have too much time to waste! The problem with the one i've already have is that whatever kind of battery (alkaline or NiMH) it only powered up for 5 seconds and then it got me a "change battery message". It wasn't possible at all to get in camera mode the lens wasn't going out. So i've opend it up and i've discoverd the source of it : water must have gotten in because there was (ad I don't know how to say it in english) some kind of green\grey stuff over the components at the botom of the camera. So i've cleaned up as much as I could with alcohol but the only thing I got is the lens to get out and in and then battery change. Since that the lcd only backlight and stays black, nothing else. I was wondering if it was an error code (The screen staying black and the backlight flashing)? Thanx a lot for your time and I hope my little adventure will make others try, because the S1 IS, for example cost around USD160 + 20USD for the shipping and a broken one is like 30USD+20 shipping... Much cheaper! Oh and is there any service manual available? Thanx a lot again!
On CANON website you can find a troubleshoot manual that can help you in some problems...

Tips for a great answer:
My grandmother... bless her socks, has poor eye sight and is slightly deaf. On some occasions she has mistaken the TV Remote Control for the mobile and has started to panic believing that the TV has gone on the blink while trying to call my mother.
After rolling on the floor in fits of laughter my mother decided to purchase one of these phones thinking that it would suit her needs. However the user manual is that small and the font quality that poor, even I had trouble reading the instructions... (Wearing my glasses and having a 2x magnifying glass on standby).
So I decided to use the OCR function on my scanner to enlarge the instructions for her... surprise, surprise even my scanner had trouble reading the font. Based on what was scanned I've recreated the instructions for her and decided to share them with the community.
Now just a little note before you download these instructions... I have attempted to copy the original user manual exactly, including the bad grammar and the over use of punctuation and therefore I'm not responsible for the poor use of English. I did however correct some of the spelling mistakes.
Enjoy hope they help.
