I have not been able to use the drive for about 9 months and it was still under warranty but DELL never helped as I expected the drive doesn't recognise the media inside the drive and ask's for me to insert media even when the drive has a media disk inside.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1200 CD/RW \ DVD Rom combo drive
Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete.
Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers.
See if that sorts it.

Looks like the answer is yes. Call to be sure. For prices and availability of parts and upgrades for this system, call 1-800-357-3355. Give them the service tag number and they will be able to tell you for sure.
Well a CD-RW/DVD ROM is a CD burner so you really dont need to replace it. Unless you meant replace it with a DVD burner then...
The best thing you can do is go to the Dell website and search your notebook/model number and look for the upgrade drive and buy it from them. If its to expensive search ebay or the web with the info you found on the Dell website (combo drive name + model number) and find one for a cheaper price.
