Question about Dell (1G055) CD-RW/DVD-ROM (Combo) Burner

Dell Inspiron 1200 CD/RW \ DVD Rom combo drive

I have not been able to use the drive for about 9 months and it was still under warranty but DELL never helped as I expected the drive doesn't recognise the media inside the drive and ask's for me to insert media even when the drive has a media disk inside. Best Regards B

Try this:- Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers. See if that sorts it.

Your drive is not a DVD burner. The way you can tell is that it is called a CD-RW/DVD drive, not a CD-RW/DVD-RW drive.

The door is stuck. I push the button, the green light flashes, but the door won't open. Dell Latitude/Inspiron CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive :8W007-A01

It is most likely jammed. If you look on the front of the drive, there should be a little hole. Use a paper clip that you have straightened out and insert it into the hole. When you feel resistance, push it hard carefully. The hole is an emergency/manual tray release. It should pop the tray out. If you can't get the tray to release and you have a CD or DVD in the drive, you will have to take the drive out of the system and take it apart to get the platter out. Of course this means you will have to buy a new drive as the old one will probably be unusable, even if you try to put it back together.

Try to visit the dell or cd/dvd manufacturer website and download the proper driver for the model of the cd-rw/dvd-rom drive.

I have Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop. I want ot replace the CD-RW/DVD with a CD burner. What should I be looking for or is it better to go with an external DVD burner?

Well a CD-RW/DVD ROM is a CD burner so you really dont need to replace it. Unless you meant replace it with a DVD burner then...

The best thing you can do is go to the Dell website and search your notebook/model number and look for the upgrade drive and buy it from them. If its to expensive search ebay or the web with the info you found on the Dell website (combo drive name + model number) and find one for a cheaper price.
