VCR combo?? I had to check the date on this post to see if it was from 1990. Do you still view VCR recordings? If not, then trash it and get a DVD player. I've seen them for less than $20 new.

Pl check remote cells are ok. If leaky clean battery contacts and replace cells, normally a small hole of 2mm on dvd tray door if visible use a needle to release door lock. Door slightly comes out pull slowly by hand. or drive belt of door opening motor got cut.
Have you checked the batteries in your remote.? They may need replacing or if you recently replaced them, are they in correctly? Also, if a DVD is stuck in it, it will not open. If this is the case, try unplugging your dvd and turning it upside down and you should hear the dvd move around a little. If it's in there, turn the dvd as though it's open to position it near the opening. Then carefully flip it back over, plug back in and try using your remote again. If the remote still does not open it, you may have to use a thin flat tool such as a fingernail file, butter knife or even a credit card to gently pry it open.
If so, unplug, leave overnight and see if it re boots just like a PC when you plug it in.
You can also try some elctronic switch cleaner spary(available from good electronic shops) spary into the draw it may free up the release mechanism dont worry wont damage machine.
LAST OPTION...BE CAREFUL !!!!!! Turn on machine, gently put a small flat end screwdriver blade into slot at top of draw and press open on remote and gently try to ease it oopen DO NOT force it. If this is going to work should not take much prssure at all. If it does not work, perhaps new machine time but they are very cheap these days.
I also had this problem. From the set up menu I reset it to the original settings and now it turns on with the remote no problem. Just wish I could get the sound to work now!
