SOURCE: the air conditioner smells like burning plastic

The fan motor or some other electrical component. Either way I would quit using it until it gets fixed as an A/C unit is cheaper than a house.

Why when I start my car is there an odor coming from vents that smells like something is burning, and my Air Conditioner still blows, but it only blows out hot air. 2008 Chrysler Sebring. Help?

have an accredited ac shop as an ac cannot produce hot air only cold air so that means that the ac is not working (leaks low on gas etc). The hot air is from the heater in the car and the smell is probably wire overheating or the resistors are burning.

My air conditioner on my 1999 kia sportage smell like smoking and like burning went turn on

do you turn on fan when using a/c ! if so heres a few causes-- burning smell in car, blower motor is going bad, or resistor is burning up.the resistor controls the fan speeds. good-day !

The burning smell could be due to gas leakage in the engine compartment. The gas smell is being sucked into the fresh air intake of the air conditioner. It can be avoided by checking either fuel pressure regulator or fuel injector.

Smoke is coming out of the a/c

Ice probably formed on the outside of the unit and the a/c is working to defrost itself. Check out this page: http://andysair.blogspot.com/2010/01/looks-like-smoke-is-coming-out-of-my.html

Heat pump was on and the smell burnt resistors coming from ducts

A burning smell could indicate an electrical problem (something overheating) or, if the unit has electric strip heaters that have not been energized for a long time, the buring smell could be the dust burning off of the heaters.

Burning smell and icing

Sounds like your blower motor in your furnace or air handler has burned up. shut the unit down and replace the motor. make sure the ice is melted and the unit is dry before you turn it back on.

Duo Therm 57915.541

Since you have a knob, I am assuming that this unit has manual controls that are mounted directly below the air conditioner on a ceiling pack. If you smell burned wiring, remove the inside shroud to access the 120VAC connections in the unit. Check these connections for OK, if they look burnt, cut them back and reattach them (be sure to turn the breaker off first). Try the AC again.

If those connections look fine, then remove the upper cover from the unit. Access the capacitors on the side of the unit and check them for ok. If any one of them looks burnt, replace it. These two places are usually the only place that you will get a burned plastic smell.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

HEAT PUMP/AIR CONDITIONER UNIT SMELLS ONLY WHEN AIR IS ON

Not sure what the smell...smells like.  My guess is dirt or dust near the heating elements.  These will cause a burning smell.  Sometimes insects even get into the act..building webs.
You will have to clean that area out...sometimes a large blower or vac can dislodge the dust.
