When I press the shutter release button, shutter remains open and the LCD on the top displays a blinking 'ERR' message and when I press it again it closes the shutter but does not capture anything. I had dropped my camera few days back from about 1 feet, don't know if that caused the problem :( Everything else in the camera seems to work as it should, camera meters properly, focus mechanism works, camera review is just fine! Any helps!! Thanks!
I was having the same problem.. And since I could not afford to take it to the shop, I tried everything I could think of...
Then I fixed it!!
It seems that the slide door behind the shutter was stuck for some reason... If you remove the lens.. (make sure the camera is in manual mode)... snap a shot so the shutter is up.. then gently slide the panel in the back down....
Once I did that.. the camera was working again.... Hope this easy solution works for you guys....

I experienced this problem yesterday at an unfortunate time. I was halfway up a mountain and the trees were covered in the heaviest frost I've seen. I missed capturing some very nice pictures.
My D50 is 2 years old. The battery was low but still functioning fine. When I got back to my hotel, I charged the battery fully, and the problem still appeared.
Today, I met someone who suggested using the reset button on the bottom of the camera. It didn't help. Then he took off the lens, turned the camera to manual mode, and pressed the shutter release. The mirror came up and you could see that the shutter was open. When the shutter release was pressed again, the shutter closed and the mirror went down. No picture was recorded.
The shutter release was pressed several times and then just held down. The camera was in continuous mode, and it just started to work properly and record to the SD card.
I don't know what solved the problem, but one other post I've seen when searching on this problem indicated that switching to manual mode cleared it up.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I wish it was that simple a problem!
