Make sure the aperture ring is set to the "A" position. If the lens doesn't have an auto aperture setting then I don't think the lens will work. There is a setting called "Using Aperture Ring" that you can setup using the menu and configuration that can be set to "Permitted" that will allow you to take pictures even if the aperture ring is not set on "A", but not sure how well this work for you, but should allow the shutter to work.

This is a good quality all metal/glass Japanese made Optomax 300mm f5.5 lens with M42 to Canon EF/EOS adapter. Length: 250mm, diam: 67mm, weght: approx 600g. A tripod mount is attached to this lens.
This lens is in excellent condition both cosmetically and optically. There are no marks or defects on the glass and no dust as far as I can see. The focussing is smooth and the aperture ring is nice and clicky.
It is supplied with M42 to Canon EF/EOS adapter which allows use with any current Canon DSLR camera. With adapter in place it focusses from approx 3m to infinity.
I have used this lens with a Canon 400D and the results are VERY SHARP when stopped down to f8 or f11. The procedure is very simple: focus wide open, stop down, take a speed reading on Av mode and transfer same reading to manual (M) mode and press the shutter button. Any slight over/under exposure can be dealt with using the camera software. You will get good results with this lightweight lens!
This lens will cost a tiny fraction of the latest Canon 300mm f4 L lens which has AF and IS (both of which eventually break down!!)

The Ritz Camera store looked quickly at my Pentax ist DL digital camera and said the sensor was dead. It would cost$400. to repair. Is that the only reason I would be getting a black image when taking a...

Yes. The CCD chip has died and they don't tend to be cheap, but I would call around to other service centers before giving up hope. $400 seems a little steep to me, but I don't often work with Pentax units, and haven't priced their CCDs recently.

The problem is with waking a sleeping Pentax ist dl: touching the shutter button doesn't reawaken it. To enable the ist dl to shoot requires turning off the camera and of course switching it on again.

This is a common problem with all the ist's. Try cleaning the battery contacts inside the camera with a pencil eraser and then with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

Does a Quantaray Tech-10 75-300 lens fit a Pentax *ist DL digital camera?

Quantaray makes lenses with a variety of mounts. If the lens has a Pentax mount then it will fit onto your camera. If it has a Canon mount, for example, then it will not.

AV error whn pentax ist DL & Quantaray zoom lens attached

I've got the same problem. The problem is that the lense is loosely attached to the body. What you need to do is that when you see the Av flashing, press the lense of the camera to the body and twist the lense to the left a bit. This tightens the connection. You can then take the photo.

Using Pentax lenses from 35 mm on the digital camera.....

I have old Lenses that I use; you must set your lens to manual, Switch left hand front of body. That should resolve the problem.

Pentax Ist DL auto focus not working anymore after using Quantaray AF LD 70-300MM Lens

It seems to be a connection issue between the Lens and the Camera body. Perhaps the mount is not true to the body Ask Pentax about this their Technical Support Team

Flash on ist DL

Looks like its true... Another major disadvantage. Removing TTL means removing one more hardware piece - TTL sensor. Pentax removed almost every nice feature, which needs some aditional or more expensive hardware: no TTL flash, less AF points, pentamirror... Seems like I bought Ds right in time.
