My toshiba RD-KX50 DVD recorder (RD-XS52 equivalent) freeze randomly Sometime he worked fine 15-20 min then freeze, sometime he freeze immediately after the startup, seem completely random behaviour. Generally, this problem is caused by bad sectors or other problems on the hard drive and can be resolved by going into the setup menu and re-formatting the hard drive. Of course, all recordings on the hard drive will be erased, so spin them off to dvd first. Be sure to have unplugged and replugged the unit immediately prior to going into the setup menu (don't try to record anything). If this doesn't work, no-one will repair this unit locally, as it must be returned to Toshiba's(TACP) depot for repair. Best of luck.
