Re:
It sounds like you may have broken the DVD carrage which is drive by a motor and gear system. This could be as simple as putting the gear back on track or as hard as replacing the carrage itself. I would suggest that you get a qualified technician to perform this task because having some experience with this I have had to repair the carrage and laser assembly when folks tried to do this on their own. I hope this helps.

This usually means the laser is damaged or our of alignment; DVD player will need to be replaced. It can also be incompatible media - not all DVD players can read all brands of DVD+R ot DVD-R discs.
Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager
Click [+] next to DVD/CD-ROM drives, double-click the drive in question. In Properties tab, make sure the box is ticked next to Enable Digital CD-Audio for this Device
My Emerson won't play anything except DVD Movies, never has, wasn't suppose too. Make your movies in DVD Video format and it will read them fine (unless it's broke). I make movies all the time and play them back in mine. It reads DVD-R, DVD+R, and in duel layered. It will not read RW disks!
Man I've every problem you can imagine with DVD Players. I've found when the disk gets stuck, as long as it's not jammed. You can turn the unit off or unplug it. Plug it back in but DON'T TURN IT ON! Instead hit the eject button and the drive should open the drive without trying to read the disk.
The clicking sound is the lens assy trying to move on the traverse mechanisim and the release spring is ticking. You might want to crack her open and look for any foreign objects in the laser area. You can also try to move the lens assy by hang gently sometimes they get stuck for no reason.
