well sounds to me like a defective disk unit and needs to be replace, your just gonna half to what, you can also use a usb external drive tease work very well and fairly cheep
Please make sure you have enough space available on your disc. Please switch to a new empty disc and let me know if you get the same error. Before trying with a new disc restart your laptop and then burn with the new disc.
Try using a programme called dvd flick http://www.dvdflick.net/ to author your dvds and use imgburn http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn them. I had similar kind of problem with dvds burned with nero and now use dvd flick and imgburn all the time and have had no problems. They are both free programmes so hopefully they will sort the problem out for you :)
your windows installer was corrupted that why its asking open with , so if you windows xp cd which came with your laptop insert the cd and while installing it will show repair option(2 times it show 2nd time u click R) it will repair the operating system and your installer will back ** data will corrupt everything will be safe
whatever programme you are using, ensure that if you have a second cd/dvd drive that this one is not set as the default burner, as there are normally options to choose.
other than that the drive must be being used by another burning programme or a programme to read discs, so check that there are no other programmes running in the background that use the writer.
Lastly, go to my computer, right click>properties>hardware tab>device manager and in the list dvd/cd drives, click'+' sign and on you drive, right click, select uninstal and reboot the pc, at which point the drive will be installed again automatically and hopefully, release the drive for whatever you want to burn.
