Question about Olympus Camedia C-450 Zoom Digital Camera

Open Question

My apple computer does not recognize the Olympus Camedia D450 SmartMedia reader-writer. How do I get my pictures to my computer?

I checked online for software updates for this and there is nothing for MacBook Pro that I can find. Is there some other configuration, or hardware, or software that would make it possible to get my pictures? It's a perfectly good camera, but pretty useless without download capability.

From reading other questions, I'm guessing that it's an issue with compatibility with MacBook Pro and the SmartMedia cards. They look like other cards, but perhaps don't work the same? I can see the pictures I took eight years ago using the screen on my camera, but alas, cannot find a way to download. There is no place for a connecting cord on the camera. What I had to do was take the card out of the camera, put it in a SmartMedia reader which was connected to a computer. At the time, I had a PC (eight years ago) and didn't have problems downloading then. However, now I have a new computer. I have the old disk for Camedia,, by the way. Unfortunately, my old computer sits in the garage gathering dust and not working or I'd just go out there and use it to save the pictures off the Smartmedia disk.

If you find an online user manual for the Olympus C-860L camera, please tell me (send an email to "dave at burtonsys dot com").  Thanks!

In the meantime, try this...

With the data cable unplugged,

Open the sliding front to turn the camera on.

Press and hold the green button on the back, light up the LCD display,

Press the menu button on the top edge of the camera (the button farthest from the shutter button).  That should bring a menu up on the screen.

Press the menu button repeatedly to switch between menu screens.  E.g., press it twice to get to the resolution screen (SHQ / HQ / SQ).

Press the "+" and "-" buttons to move between menu items.

Press the shutter button to select/OK the menu item you have selected.

I hope this helps!

SOURCE: Vista not recognising Olympus camera on USB connection

I just spoke to Olympus Tech Support.

You have to download Olympus Master 2. (Their program is no longer called Camedia Master.)

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/oima_softwareMaster.asp

At their main site, search for olympus master 2.

Camera will not connect to computer to download pic.

This camera model may not connect to new operating systems such as Windows Vista due to its age and lack of support from Olympus. In order to download photos you will need to use a memory card reader to connect and download photos. Be sure to purchase a memory card reader that will accept the type of memory card you have. I believe this camera uses SmartMedia which is no longer used and a card reader will be harder to locate.

this might work for you, just did for my C-2020 Z Camedia with very similar problem (card errors, 'format card' screen, even dumping taken photos) Being an old overused 32MB smartmedia card, thought that was the issue, but not:
I removed the card and simply blew into the open card slot a few times, using short, 'early breath' thrusts as likely not good to get too much heat/condensation in there. Bingo! Works perfectly again after months of not. Try it out, can't hurt, and save the $49 on a new card which would likely still malfunction, anyway.

Olympus digital camera c-830L driver for windows xp

Either use a Smartmedia reader, or download the D-340R driver (twain31.exe) from the Olympus America site.

The C-380L is the same camera as the D-340R

Have upgraded to Windows XP. Do I require new Camedia software as Camedia Master 2.0 version that I have with my Olympus C-3030 Zoom will not install. Thanks - Jamie Gardner

The camera is a standard connect camera and what we recommend for XP and Vista users is to look into purchasing a smartmedia card reader that connects to USB port so that you are able to transfer images using the reader as opposed to connecting camera to PC. The camera connection is not XP or Vista compliant.

D-380 smartmedia card formatting

There is something alled the CIS header on Smartmedia cards. If that is missing or damaged, any compliant Smartmedia device will not let you use the card. Many card readers are not Compliant and thus ignore the CIS block.

It is advisable to not try and "recycle" cards with a damaged CIS block by using them in a non complying card reader because of one of the reasons why the CIS block is there is to ensure something called the bad block table is present on the card as well. The bad block table maps the locations of bad memory cells and prevents writing to them so the card will apear 100% good. All cards have some bad cells from the factory even. Most likely the bad block table will be missing as well and your non complant card reader will end up writing over bad memory cells which will cause future read errors and data loss.

You would need access to a compliant Smartmdia reader that is compatible with the SMPREP (or similar) formatting utility to fix problem smartmedia cards. SMPREP fixes the CIS block and scans the entire card for bad memory cells and updates the bad block table.

Usb reader/ writer

Start "Disk Utility" and "repair disk permissions on all disks.  Restart the Mac and it should fix.   I don't believe one ever needs to load a driver on a Mac for any card reader.   It should work as plug and play.
Good luck.

"panorama function"

The panorama function on the Olympus Smartmedia card is a header on the card that allows the Panorama function to work on the camera, displaying "helper" lines on the LCD display and fixing the exposure to the first shot taken. Photos taken with the panorama function can be stitched together using the Camedia Software supplied with your camera. The Camedia Panoramic function is OK, but I prefer the results I get with PanaVue Image assembler. The header is only available on the Olympus cards. But it can be written on any smartmedia card using the smprep/Winhex editor process using and a card reader/writer detailed on this forum. Use the search function for "pan smprep" and you'll find out how.

Smartmedia Panorama mode

I don't know what you are doing, but my Nikon 4500 has a panoramic feature. It has nothing to do with the memory card. When you put it in panorama mode, on the second and subsequent shots, it shows about 1/3 of the previous shot in the viewfinder. You line that up with your present shot, and take the picture. The Nikon software, on a computer, can probably stitch the photos back together. You can do the same thing in an image editing program.
