No picture on half of screen

Everything seems to be working fine except there is only lower half the picture and a bright line in the middle. This tv is about 4-5 yrs old and i worry that the repair cost will be equivalent to the replacement cost. I am wondering if i can fix it myself if i know what part to replace. Thanks tom

    Thanks tvtek!

Would you know of good place in the web to find this part?

I'll post the results in a week or two assuming I survive the electrocutions :)

The vertical output IC is most likely the cause. On a 27 inch TV the generic part number is AN5522 the location number ic IC561. Be careful of dangerous voltages within the TV powered on or off.

SINCE YOU HAVE HALF THE PICTURE THE VERTICAL IC IS STILL WORKING. THE PUMP UP CAPACITOR AND THE OTHER ELECTOLITIC CAPACITOR IN VERTICAL CIRCUIT MAY BE BAD. THE CAPACITOR IS USUALLY 100UF OR 220 UF AT 35V REPAIR EST. IS $135.00

I have the exact same TV and the very same problem! (sounds like a SONY bug to me!) Curious of the original poster (Layton) had tried the suggestions and which one fixed the problem? Thanks! ALSO, as a caution, I googled replacing the electrolytic capacitors and it can be very dangerous if you touch certain wires, can cause cardiac arrest according to the site http://www.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/~reese/electrolytics/index.html ... SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

I DON'T THINK THAT VERTICAL OUT-PUT IC IS FAULTY BUT DECOUPLING ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITORS ARE. JUST REPLACE ALL ELECTROLATIC CAPACITORS IN VERTICAL SECTION AND I HOPE PROBLEM IS SOLVED.99% OF TIME THIS PROBLEM COMES BECAUSE OF THAT.IF VERTICAL IC IS FAULTY THEN YOU WILL GET A SINGLE HORZONTAL LINE AND SUPPLY RESISTOR OF THAT IC WILL BLOW OPEN AND TV WILL GO IN PROTECTION MODE.

No picture in upper half of screen, normal at bottom

Could be something as simple as a bad contact on one of the deflection yokes or other coils on the cathode ray tube - check the contacts on the circuit board where these coils are connected, resolder the pins or wires if the contact is bad, also check connector pins for any dirt or oxydation and clean if necessary.

Read more about this kind of problem at:

Hope this helps somewhat.

Flickering multi-colored line in the middle of the screen.

You have a failure in the vertical deflection circuit. This could be either a bad vertical chip, the power supply that runs the chip or a bad capacitor in that circuit. This is usually a repair best left to a professional. There is a small possibility that it could be bad solder connections. If genlty tapping the unit temporarily solves the issue you can try and resolder the pins on the vertical chip LA7841 is the part number. There is also a resistor 1 ohm 1 watt. If that resistor is open you can assume the IC is bad

Sounds like a problem with the vertical circuit. If yuo can solder and are comfortable with working inside the set, you may be able to repair this.
