After scanning a dozen of negs fine, the scanner stopped working and when I ejected the film holder, it made a very loud noise. Now every time I turn it on, it makes that loud noise, like a siren, like screaming... it seems something is blocking inside, that the carriage is not moving... HELP!

did you properly close the scanner lid? these type of errors do usually occur when you unproperly close the lid wherein light passes inside causing it to reflect on the document that you are trying to scan
Unfortunately, you cannot use Digital ICE on B&W films due to silver particles contained within the film. The Digital ICE future only works with C-41 (negatives) and E-6 (slides) processed films, but not B&W films.
You really cannot scan a neg without a special holder. I recommend paying $90 to Costco and buying their special USB Scanner which scans one neg at atime! They are great!
If you are seeing pixelation, the issue is either insufficient resolution during the scanning process or a problem with the output device.
If it's a focus issue, which will NOT cause pixelation, the problem may be the height of the negative holder.
The Epson Perfection V series scanners have a fixed focus point which only adjusts between two settings depending on whether you select the film holders (which raise the film off the glass) or the film guide (which scans film directly on the glass) in the software options. If you are going to scan transparencies or negatives, familiarize yourself with the holder height adjustment issue and be willing to experiment with different height settings until you are getting optimum results. This is not documented much at all in the Epson user manual but there is a little bit about it, including some examples of results at different settings, here:

Apparently every scanner is slightly different so even though the lowest holder foot setting (default) is working best for some, other settings work better for others. On my V700, I have the feet on the film holders set to the highest setting plus I shimmed them with a 1mm piece of styrene before I could get the scans in focus. Once I found the right height though, I've been able to get beautiful scans from this machine. BTW, scanning negs directly on the glass will almost always result in Newton Rings.
I went to System, devise manager and then hardware. Found a problem with the fire wire connection.I checked the wire, it's six pin as recommended. So I have to assume it's a connection issue and not mechanical. It also has a scuzie 50-50 pin connection, might try that too if all else fails. Now I'm going into the Registry and un-installing all the microtek programs. I will then reinstall.. Then I will buy a single FW connection card and and as good a wire as possible and try isolating the connection so there is no conflict with another program. Then light a candle. If no go, it's a $1700.00 loss and my last Microtek purchase. The support from this company is beyond bad!!

I brought a
coolscan 9000 the last month without the film holders, software etc just the
scanner. A friend of mine sold me it for a good price. I run Leopard in a
Powerbook G4 15”1.2 ghz 2 Gigas
ram. I installed the Nikon scan 4 and when I open it the scanner report an
error: The Scanner has reported a hardware error... every time that I run the
program this message appears. I thought that this was because I hadn’t got the
film holders. When the film holders arrive from USA the same problem appears :
The Scanner has reported a hardware error... Them I tried Silverfast Software.
In this case the scanner report another error: there are not film holder ( or
something like that). I uninstalled Nikon Software with the same utility to
install it. Reinstall the Software and the same ****** problem. When I switch
on the scanner a loud noise came from inside, after this the blinking light
stopped and nothing happen ( no calibration, no light inside, nothing). Just
one thing. The Scanner has reported a hardware error... I checked
on internet and the solution of switch it of and on doesn’t work. CALL TO THE
NIKON SERVICE that’s was my only solution. Of course I
didn’t . The price of the scanner was 300 Pounds. SO I OPENED
IT. I REMOVED
THE SCREWS FROM THE BACKSIDE AND FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE SCANNER. I TOOK THE
METALLIC CASE OF: PICTURE
1. After a while looking everything without touch I’m start to check for
the connection cables one by one, WHEN DISCOVER THAT ONE CABLE PLUG THAT GOES
FROM THE SCANNER TO THE FIREWARE BOARD WAS DESCONECTED…. PICTURE
2 Maybe on the shipping this plug looses his place. SO I SWITCH ON THE
SCANNER AND THE PROBLEM DOESN’T APPEAR. Now the problem was that the film
holder wasn’t recognising from the scanner. So I followed the steps that most
frequently indicate on the web: 1-Close the
scan program – 2-Turn off and unplug the scanner 3-Plug the LS9000 back in and turn it on 4-Reopen the scan program The scanner worked. When I switch on the scanner take a minute or so to
calibrate and determinate the film holder. Them I open the Nikon Scan 4 and
every looked nice. I could scan my first negative ALELUYAAAAA. So I close
everything without the screws so I put the scanner vertical to put back the
metal case ones I finished I turned on the scanner and the Nikon program. For
my surprise the same ******* error I couldn’t believe it. I opened it again and I found the causeof the problem . BECAUSE THE SCANNER WAS ON VERTICAL BEFORE,
THE METALLIC GUIDE THAT CONNECT WITH THE SERVO WAS MOVED (Move the scanner from
one place to another may cause this issue) So with my finger I putted it in the
same place. THE SCANNERWORK’S. After this the only problem was a big loud gnashing and grinding noise
that I sorted with CELOTAPE BETWEEN THE TWO PIECES THAT WAS SEPARATED BEFORE. PICTURE
3 Now the scanner work fine. Sorry for my **** English and I hope that
someone can find useful this information.
When you say -'normal' prescan
you do mean you get an image?
If this is so I would remove all software.
Do a disc clean
Reboot the computer
Re install the original supplied software-ignore for the time being any down loaded upgrade,
Come back tell me what you have
CCD failing or processor fault
If you can correct the faults in an image editor then thats OK do that.
other wise a new scanner - these things are generally not a repair opti
