Re: set will not stay on
Better get this checked out by a technican. One possible reason could be coolant from the picture tubes leaking down onto the printed circuit board causing this symptom which could end up destroying the circuit traces on that board. Other possibilities include problems in the power supply or deflection circuits. If the set is over 8 years old, I would just replace it with a HDTV.

Mine looks like too, but the line running across isn't on my set, picture looks like this, and the sound works fine. I took the tuner board all the way out and turned the set on and it did the same thing, then I unplugged the top wire on the board next to the tuner board and the screen went black. plugged it back in and the screen came back with the scrambled picture. Anyone know why? Bad mainboard maybe? the left of the tuner board?
This does not sound to me like a convergence roblem. It could be a shorted picture tube. That would put the set in a shutdown condition. Normally in Toshibas , the picture remains on with
a convergence problem. Here is something you can try, but you must be very careful. Remove one crt board at a time from all three tubes. if the set stays on after one of the crt board are removed , then that is the shorted picture tube.I cannot caution you on how care full you have to be trying this procedure. sounds like you have a frame fold-over fault, does banging the tv have any effect (slightly bang the set on the sides), if it does then its more than likely a dry joint, check all around the frame output chip, hope this is of some help to you
