I had the same problem- jam error with no paper in it. I tried all of the suggestions to no avail. So as a last resort before I went and purchased another one I unplugged it, picked it up, turned it upside down and whacked it a few times. To my surprise when I plugged it back up it worked just fine! Haven"t had any problem since. I don"t reccomend this but as a last resort, what the heck!

We had the same problem and there was NO PAPER IN THE MACHINE! We opened the front, reached down to the right side, pulled up on the little purple roller holder, removed the roller and put it back. The machine thought we cleared the jam and it solved the problem. Seaford, DE

I believe that this is a board level problem as I have seen many 1040's with this very same problem and I have taken them apart and cleaned and reconditioned the rubber rollers that feed the paper thru with no real luck. I have also noted that the sensor that detects the paper does not appear to be functioning either when activated or deactivated the srror state does not change. I therefore feel that this is a main board defect.

Try cleaning the paper rollers. If they're worn or dirty, they can't grab paper, and the machine gives a jam error, even though there's no paper jammed. This is a common problem. Use alcohol and a clean lint-free cloth (don't use paper towels).

Display says line error and print out says jam

• Check the connection. The cord from the TEL.LINE jack to the wall jack should be no longer than
six feet.
• Make sure there are no modem devices sharing the same telephone line.
• Check with the other party to make sure their fax machine is functioning properly.
• Have your telephone line checked for line noise.
• Try connecting the fax machine to a different telephone line.
• If the problem still occurs, your fax machine may need service.

Fax

Hi,

Often, this type of problem is caused by the paper sensor which is nothing but a small switch activated with the presence of the paper(s) pressing on it, It would look like a small tab/lever that would move (to activate the switch) by the paper pushing against it. You would have to inspect this lever/switch and determine if it would move freely. It is very rare for the actual switch to go bad, often it would be just the tab/lever not depressing deep enough to engage said switch.

Hope that this beof initial idea/help. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
