This is my SECOND Canon PowerShot A520, and its got the same problem as my first one.
My dad got me it for christmas the year before this past christmas, and it died on me about 4 months later. No batteries would work, even fresh alkaline ones. Nothing happened to it, never dropped, no water splashed on it, nothing. We called to see if we could get it repaired (the website says they will fix it free of charge. BS.), and the person told us it would be less expensive to buy another.
so we did, and four months later, BAM. Same exact problem. no batteries will work.
sometimes i can turn it on and look through past pictures and edit my settings, but when i switch it to take pictures, it says "change the batteries". so i do, and the same things happen.
If you are thinking about buying this camera, id suggest finding a different kind, because my friend also has the same camera, and the same exact problems.
If any one has had these problems and has worked them out WITHOUT spending tons of money, Pleaaassee help.

Nov 30, 2007 - It was a fix for a Canon A520, but am not sure if it would work for ..... I have a Canon Powershot A540 which will not turn on and lens is stuck out extended.... (even when they are new) in camera mode and not playback mode.
Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
try http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=320&modelid=11125 and choose digital cameras, powershot a series and then a520. the drivers are available when you choose an operating system.
hey guys. there is no solution that you can do it for yourself. the best solution i can give for you is take it to service centre. here in india we get charged nearly 1800rupees for servicing the lens portions.
I have a "broken" A520 that needs a new LCD. I really don't want to spend another $90 to get it fixed so may be willing to sell it for parts. Let me know. I don't know about any guide for disassembly however.
