When I switched my mac on yesterday I noticed the image on the screen was flickering, this lasted about 5 mins then the top of the screen went dull, but stayed bright at the bottom (I can see an image over the entire screen). The power button on the monitor is constantly flashing too - any ideas?

For the brave of heart, You can disassemble the monitor. After you get in to the inside of it, you'll see a circuit panel with 6 ballast coils on it. On my Cinema display, what happened was that the solder joints on some of those coils had cracked, causing intermittent connection. After hitting all the connections with a soldering iron to heal the cold solder joints and re-assembling it, it is working perfectly fine now.

Hi Lusciousleri,
Some Apple LCD panels can report problems then encounter. I'm betting if you watch you'll see a pattern of a short flash, followed by another short flash followed by a long and then repeating. That indicates a backlight error, which typically means a trip to the authorized Apple repair shop.

Hi,
You need to reset the firmware.
Remove the battery, and boot up but holing the power button down until you hear a loud Beeeeeeeeep, and the lights start flashing.
Let go, and wait.
Regards.
well..it should on power along..seems that perhaps the motherboard is unhappy..here's something to try..remove battery..flip over the computer, open the panel with memory..ground your hands on metal..then remove and re seat memory sticks(be careful to NOT touch the gold fingers). close it back up..plug in wall ONLY, try it again.
when the screen is black and the power light is steadly lit, shine a flash light at the screen. if you can see something, the inverter board is bad and the back light cannot turn on. if the power light flickers, reseat the power plug and put your ear to the back of the monitor where the power plug is. if you hear a buzzing or any high pitched noises; the power supply is bad. use the macufactures warranty for repairs.
This sounds like a video card issue with the Mac Pro, have you tried testing the display with a different computer?
Next, check for any software/firmware updates from Apple and install if necessary.
Next, I suggest resetting the SMC to flush out any legacy niggles, this can be accomplished by following these instructions as provided by Apple.
To reset the SMC on a Mac Pro:
From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
Wait at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
Press the power button to start up your computer.
Another way to reset the SMC on a Mac Pro computer is:
From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
Open and remove the metallic outer door.
Press the SMC_RST switch that is located slightly below and to the right of the row of diagnostic LEDs. Use a non-metallic, non-conductive object, such as a wooden pencil. Note: Mac Pro (Early 2008) does not have an SMC_RST switch, refer to the reset procedure steps in the previous section.
Replace the metallic outer door.
Press the power button to start up your computer.
If the problem persists and you have identified that the problem is definitely with the display then any further information you can provide would be most helpful in diagnosing the problem - otherwise, if it is the video card then (assuming it's still warrantied) get in touch with Apple. If out of warranty then I'm sure we can guide you through the replacement process if needed!
Hi, i noticed that when I unplugged my HP the screen stopped flickering. I then re-plugged in the power, when to the Nvidia control settings, to PowerMizer, and changed 'ac outlet' to Maximum Power Saving.
Not the world's greatest solution, but hey, working laptop now.
