Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A dead Akai could be caused by several faults. Among them are:

  • convergence ICs faulty (most likely). They are STK392-040. A complete repair kit together with resistors and possibly pico fuses as well as instruction sheet detailing how-to procedures is available at http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/;
  • coolant leak in any of the CRT/tubes (likely);
  • power supply board (least likely).
This of course would require a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you needadditional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

If the TV has a flashing light on the front that says "lamp" or if all 3 lights flash then it is likely you will need a lamp.
look on the left side ot the TV and there should be a sticker with a number on it, that is your lamp part number, if you google that you will find a bunch of hits. I tried to look it up but they change (akai is a rebranded samsung) parts so frequently it is hard to keep up.

Can you expand on this. Possible details as to what may have happened before this problem occurred? Usually, the bulb is the first thing worth checking into and without more information, this is what you should check into replacing first. Is there a light blinking or anything else that would indicate what went wrong? Is there still audio? The problem may also lie with the power supply but again, I need more details which may require some electronic expertise so please reply with anything you can tell me and if you don't know anything for sure, I can tell you where to start and guide through the problem

Did you check the power plug and plug it to a different power outlet. You can also check the power supply board. Start with the fuse coz maybe its just blown. If it is, you can simply replace it.

If you have a good picture except for a missing color all the various circuits are working OK. Most likely you have a bad solder joint or component in the red circuit. This would also be indicated by the fact that ocassionaly the red pops in. If you have the experience remove the boards and inspect for cracked or cold solder joints. Resolder anything that looks suspicious. If this does not fix it you will have to troubleshoot the red drive circuits from the CRT back to the video IC. Another possibility is that you have a bad/intermitant red crt. I doubt that you have the equipment to check this but you can test it by moving the green crt board to the red crt. If it now works the red crt is OK. If all this fails you will need to find a reputable repair shop to look at it. If the unit is more than 5 years old it may not be worth fixing. Good luck.

Also, this could be from a leaking CRT. In CRT projection televisions, the red, green, and blue tube are filled with coolent (glycol). These 42" models are very bad about the tubes leaking (Akai and Samsung models)and are infamous for destroying the CRT driver board connected to the bottom of each tube. When this happens, the protection circuit kicks in and will not let the television start up. *PLEASE, FOR YOUR OWN SAKE, DO NOT FOLLOW THESE NEXT STEPS IF YOU HAVE NO UNDERSTANDING OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT!!!! There are four screws and three snap clips that hold the bottom on. UNPLUG THE TELEVISION, remove the screws and pull bottom outward to remove. The bottoms of the three tubes should be visible. DON'T TOUCH THEM!! Now look under each tube. If one is leaking, there will be a wet spot (or sometimes a puddle!) underneath the tube. This will have to be serviced by a TV tech. Hope this helps...

SOURCE: only the red light comes on

Whats up Wade?

This is DVD MIKE with Perfectimagess.Try this first .Unplug the TV for a while and press the On/Off button which is supposed to perform a "reset".After that, plug the TV back in. It should come on and the Timer light off. The picture and colors might be distorted, but pressing the Perfect Focus button on the remote control resolves this right away.

The problems is a black picture or the TV won't turn on. The Timer light stays lit even though no Timer has ever been set. The colors converge and the picture is pinched. I don't think all of the expensive repairs are necessary, My TV did go out after a week of non-use while out of town (I was out of town, not the TV). I don't know. I'll post more if I learn more. I hope this helps Wade,

Vacuum the dust off of the circuit boards and inside the cavity. TAKE CLOSE UP PICTURES OF THE CONNECTORS BEFORE DISCONNECTING FROM THE CIRCUIT BOARDS. (IF YOU HAVE TO.) TAKE OUT CIRCUIT BOARD MOUNTING SCREWS. AND REMOVE THE BOARDS.

VACUUM THE DUST. LOOK- SMELL AND CLEAN THE GROUNDS, AND CAREFULLY CLEAN THE BOARDS. ASSEMBLE. DOUBLE CHECK CONNECTIONS WITH PHOTOS,
AND PLUG IN, TURN ON AND HOPEFULLY ITS ALL GOOD.

WADE WORK WITH ONE HAND AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE SON!!

SOURCE: RED LIGHT FLASHES 10 TIMES BUT WILL NOT TURN ON!

There might really be a problem with the unit. Try unplugging it out of the power outlet and plug it back in after 30 seconds. If your using a power box (voltage regulator), try plugging it directly to the outlet. If all nothing happens, see a local tv tech in your area. The unit could be damaged.

TV wont turn on

You can try unplugging it for 4 hours. Like I have said you have 2 options replacing the parts that are possibly bad. Which is common on these tv's. It will run 550-1000$. Your more economically viable solution is to replace the tv.
If you need further assistance please ask.
Thanks,
