The hotpoint manual for the forno sy36x shows 3 buttons. Mine has 6 but with all the info worn off. How do I find out their uses?

Sounds like it could be could be due to a bad or loose connection..
You need to access the control panel, and check the connections.
If the oven is built in, then you will have to remove it from the unit.

SOURCE: hotpoint sy36x grill element works fine but when

it seems to me that it is a fan oven and the top element won't heat up you need a new fan oven element. it is a round element that sits behind the back grill surrounding the fan...

In the menu on the left, click on---Hotpoint user manuals, then in the search box on the right, enter your model number in CAPITAL letters without spaces, and download the user instructions.
This should solve your problem.
